Wheels

Featured Replies

Hello.  I'm trying to figure out what wheel choice to go for.  Im keen on the peg Asus and would prefer the anthracite bit not available on SEL. also just looked at a few pics and it seems the pegasus are diamond cut no matter that they are painted silver on the SEL (non anthracite) version. This seems a little pointless to me.

I'd prefer if they weren't diamond cut given how fragile they are hence my interest. Does anyone know for sure?

If they are then my next question is about the modus which would be my secondolences choice. Are they diamond cut?

Cheers

I have the Modus and they are not diamond cut.  Not sure about the Pegasus but if they are diamond cut you are right to be wary - I had diamond cut wheels on my previous car (not a Skoda) and they didn't last long before having to be replaced under warranty. Photo of how the modus look on my car below.

What happened to your diamond cut ones?

I think the explanation was that the laminate surface 'broke down' which allowed water onto the bare wheel surface. They were part metal diamond cut finish and part black painted - the metal finished parts started to go white, and the black painted parts had what looked liked water marks on them which wouldn't come off and the paint started peeling. This was on a Honda and must have been a known issue - I left it a while before taking back to the dealer and it was then over 3 years old but Honda agreed to replace all 4 wheels even though it was out of guarantee period. Can't fault that for customer service. I have read on many websites that diamond cut wheels are not best for a daily driver car.

Once the lacquer gets a break in it the diamond cut wheels start to oxidize and turn white under the lacquer.

Anything like a strong tfr or APC cleaner can cause this too. Ive seen hand car washes ruin diamond cut rims due to using a high concentration tfr or APC (essentially acid) which has eaten away at the lacquer/got under via a break in it.

I've ordered modus wheels on my service tech which is due in 3 weeks.

Think my problem was caused by poor quality finish in the first place - plus the general problems associated with diamond cut wheels - I always wash the car myself and only use normal car shampoo when washing the wheels. The open design of the modus wheels does make them easier to clean.

BMW also have issues with diamond cut variants.  The issue is the water based lacquers now mandated and even the slightest nick in that surface means premature failure is more likely, and warranty replacement is the only option.  The wheel manufacturers need to use a better lacquer recipe for the hostile road environment in many countries, but are stuck with environmental compliance challenges.

So when I get my new Superb with pegasus anthracites I was going to use a iron decontaminate such as iron x is all over the car including the wheels. Is this a bad idea then for them?
