Towing with an Automatic MK1 90BHP Anyone Tried?

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I have 2 Octavias MK1 TDI's. An 90BHP Auto & a 110 Remapped to 137 ( Blacksmoke Map)

Anyway I towed a trailer with my remapped 110, and it struggled! it would not go over 58MPH. It is not the weight o the trailer but the air resistance ( Big box trailer).

Anyway I need to tow this trailer now if possible with my 90BHP auto for a 5 hour drive.

Just wondered if anyone has towed with an auto? I am concerned as it has a lot less power than my 110 manual.

Thanks,
Jon

I think the 90 is going to struggle if the trailer aero is that bad.

58mph is just over peak torque for a standard 110.

What size is the trailer to be that un aerodynamic?

My 90wasnt an auto but with a chunk of weight on it struggled..couldnt imagine doing a very long drive with it if thats bad..

Avoid motorways and stick to 40-50mph max? Or go on the motorway and slipstream a lorry?!

If neither of those options appeals then I think I'd avoid it.

Thanks for the replies.

I am playing it safe the 110 is going to be driven up to tow the trailer back... Then I will try the trailer on the 90 for a short drive see how it is, if all ok it can do a big trip with it.

My poor 110 does get used!! I lug my caravan around withit as well, but it takes it well. Oil change every 6k only thing I have done is fit a turbo to it, as that went with a big bang!.
