1999 Yamaha YZF1000R Thunderace

Featured Replies

Shamelessly copying from my Ebay auction, but here we go...

My Thunderace for sale, in the best colour. 1999 on a T-reg. Currently 33647 miles which will rise slightly. New MOT (expires in April 2018).

Comes with heated grips, Pipewerx exhaust, Datatool alarm and 2 fobs, crash bungs. The exhaust sounds amazing - comes with a removable baffle if you'd like it a bit quieter.

Givi rack now removed, not included in sale. The pictures also show a custom seat which again is NOT included in the sale, but I've included a picture of the standard seat which will be fitted - the custom seat will be offered first to the buyer.

At 32k, the bike had new Pirelli Angel tyres, rebuilt front forks and calipers, and a service - which cost around £700. It also had  Black Widow polished stainless steel header pipes fitted (another £265) which removes the Exup valve so you will have no maintenance worries. A friend of mine owns the same bike with original Exup valve, and there is no obvious difference between the 2 performance wise with the valve fitted. More recently the slave cylinder was rebuilt with new fluid all round.

The bike is 18 years old now but is generally in good condition. Some of the metal bits have some surface corrosion and the only real 'damage' is to the near side corner of the front screen and top fairing, which has a small piece snapped off - as shown in one of the pictures. HPI clear with certificate. Starts perfectly every time - needs a bit of choke in the cold but settles down within 2 minutes. Rides and handles really well, chain and sprockets look good.

Other points to note:

1) Most Thunderaces burn oil - this one isn't too bad, but it does burn a bit. Just needs checking every few weeks i.e. when oiling the chain.
2) Another common Thunderace issue: it's hard to find neutral, just needs a few revs before it will easily slot in. Google it and you'll see people frequently moaning about it. My mechanic has checked the clutch over (receipt in the history) and found nothing obvious at fault.
3) Some of the dash bulbs are out near the speedo. I have some replacements but haven't fitted them yet - they will come with the bike (also a spare oil filter)

Comes with good history: partially stamped service book, some bills receipts, all old MOTs etc., original manual, toolkit and 2 ignition keys.

New bike arriving shortly (so no part exchanges please) so will listen to reasonable offers. Will probably be SORNed and no longer insured in 1 to 2 weeks - so strictly no test rides without full cash in hand. If you come to view sooner rather than later whilst insurance is still valid, I will happily come out for a spin with you.

Bike is in Bristol/Bath border BS39. Could possibly deliver up to 100 miles if you cover fuel and return journey costs.

Any questions, please shout.

Nice bike! I have its baby brother - a Thundercat! Unfortunately having to put mine up for sale too...

GLWS!

Ta. Yes both great bikes, both with the pros and cons. I did try a Thundercat at the time having had a couple of other 600's, but the devil in me wanted the Thunderace :)

Quite amused to find this crop up in my Facebook feed yesterday - I don't know whether to be grateful for the free advertising, or offended at having my bike selected as the 'bad' choice!
