Metallic 'clink' noise when I pull away from standstill

Featured Replies

When I pull away from a standstill, my Octavia (more often than not) makes a metallic 'clink' noise. I've also noticed it when driving with the window down at normal road speed, when the sound is reflected back at me from e.g. the concrete central divider on a motorway.

When I pull away it'll make one or two 'tink tink' noises, if it is at road speed then it seems to be random, independent of engine speed, road speed, how bumpy the road is etc.

It is quite a clear noise, it doesn't sound muffled by something, or contained within a component, if you see what I mean. I'll try and get a recording of the noise, but I'm not sure whether my phone will pick it up...

Any ideas? It is doing my head in...

Finally managed to get under the car. Not much movement when the throttle is tickled, but is that movement when the engine is switched on normal?

It's quite possibly the pads moving in the brake calipers. They have a little play side-to side, and this only gets worse as the age and the mileage builds up. It's especially an issue on the rear calipers on these cars, as they have problems with pad retraction, especially if there's a bit of corrosion on the sliders and they haven't been rebuilt / replaced for a while.

So the noise is when the pads move and stop against the inside of the caliper with a 'click.' You might start to see if this is the issue by winding all the windows down, stopping in a car park or somewhere there is a wall alongisde the car to reflect back any noise to hear it better, reverse then hit the brakes and stop, then drive forwards from a standstill a bit sharpish. If you hear the 'clunk' noise when you drive forwards, then you know where to start looking.

Cheers!

Will check, they were replaced a year ago so you never know. More of a 'clink' than a 'clunk' though. Someone suggested console bushes. Haven't tried checking yet though...
