Major oil leak

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I discovered I had a major oil leak today - it appears to be coming from somewhere above the bell housing / side of the engine.  I have cleaned it up with some brake cleaner, and I'm about to go see if  I can discover exactly where it is coming from.  Anyone know of any major oil leaks from this area?

Some background - It needed topping up last week after a friend had had it for a week, but only 3/4 litre.  The oil that had leaked out does look a bit too clean for engine oil, and I am wondering if it is gearbox oil...   I have been wondering for the last few months if my DSG clutch needs replacing, and it has been acting up on moving away, especially when cold - hope it is not a major gearbox issue!!

Cheers if anyone can advise!

Skoda Yeti 1.2 TSi DSG

Land Rover Defender 110 TD5 (this thing I can fix easy.... and have to quite often ;)

At the last service I was told I had a gearbox oil seal that was leaking - I left it though as it never drips on  my drive (and they mysteriously never spotted it at the MoT a few weeks earlier).

Welcome.

When was your Yeti 1.2 TSI built.

& has the DSG had or required the Service Campaign to check the MCU & change the Synthetic Oil to Mineral Oil and do a Software Update.

'34F7',

Or will it maybe be going in for the latest Service Campaign to do a Software Update?  '34H5'

Best check it might depend on the Build Date and if going in the Technician can advise on what it is with your Oil leak & misbehaving DSG.

Thanks for the comments!  It is definitely gearbox oil.

It's a 2010, but I've only had it almost a year.  The lady who owned it previous, had a full service history - and looking at it, I think it had some work done in 2013 - system upgrade and some oils I do not recognise (its in Portuguese, so it s a tad difficult to translate).

It needs a service anyway, so I'm going to book it in and get it towed over there.  I'd love to do it myself but just don't have the time!

The first place to check might be the 'rocker box' (cam cover) seal just above the bell housing as its a relatively easy and cheap fix.........or was when I was a boy.

Update - dropped it off the at the local Skoda dealer, they said if it is a major gearbox problem, they will swap it out for a recon one, as its cheaper than the labour of fixing the old one, anyone know of any dealerships doing this and the cost?

It could still be something easily fixable, but I'm doubting.

Update -  I had a large hole in the interior of the bell housing!  One of the differential pins had popped out (I assume a serclip had broken) and smashed a hole though to the bell housing.

They have never replaced a skoda DSG gearbox in Portugal, and they say a similar one for a VW Sharan cost almost 7K Euro!!!  The guy at the dealership is trying to get Skoda germany to offer something when they supply the price for the new gearbox... I'm still waiting to hear back.

You said the Lady that owned it had work in 2013 to do something, so maybe the Service Campaign and maybe something else,

possibly the Clutch Packs.

A Skoda DSG is the same as a VW, Audi or SEAT so hopefully someone somewhere knows their job as a Technician Mechanic.

Sharan & Alhambra are built in Portugal.

A DQ200 7 speed DSG is not almost 7,000 Euro, but maybe with fitting that is what Warranty Companies or Customers get charged.

Best check Ebay for the price of the New DSG's, they sell there as do new Engines as VW Supply.

Cheers... already been checking on Ebay, so I'm ready to jump on a recon or good 2nd hand one.

I'm playing dumb with the dealership garage at the moment, to see what happens - then I'll play the clutch pack issue card, not fit for purpose etc etc.  I won't be letting it lie thats for sure.

I'll keep you posted!

Where are you getting a Reconditioned DSG if a Dealership has not changed one.  Which country is it coming from?

  I would avoid doing that.

Do you have a 12 month Warranty from where you bought the car from?

?

How many miles had it done when you bought it and how many now?

Thanks for the concern :)

I've just been looking on ebay uk, there are second hand ones, obviously from scrap yards, and a few recon ones, that come with a warranty.  If, I go down that route, I'll make sure I know what I'm buying.

No warranty on the car unfortunately, it was a private sale.  The car had 99000 KM on it when I got it, 117000 KM now, so about 70K miles.
