220tsi sudden rattle developed under acceleration

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've had my car for a month now, bought it with around 4300 miles on it and now it's around 5500.

Today its started a sort of weird rattle under acceleration, it seems to be coming from the back of the engine or underneath as the sound comes through to the cabin from around the cubby hole in front of the gear lever.

It only happens under load but the car has not lost any power at all.

Any ideas, or should I just take it to Skoda?

Cheers

It could be the same with what i experienced on my golf 1,4 tsi, but it is solvable with a "clip" something to be put in the turbo (1 min operation) ... at that time was poor design flaw... they corrected and since then no issues... maybe it s not the same but go and see the service to be sure and keep us updated also.

for sure no impact in the engine power or safety, consumption... just the rattle at around 2000-3000 rpm as i remember.

thx,

Thanks Corbu, I have been doing a lot of reading around this and it seems that there are a lot of Golf GTI Mk7 (same engine as me) owners with the issue you have described. I have found this on YouTube so if it doesn't disappear on its own I'll take it to the dealers and mention the clip to them :) cheers

Yes this is the issue but i thought was solved with the new engines ... this issue was in 2014 with my 1.4 tsi gol (eur 5 and 122 bhp)...but seems to be an issue with all TSIs... still is strange... almost 3 years have passed.

you are welcome... keep us posted also. Good luck.

I found another YouTube video which was actually quite helpful, I have done the same as the guy in the video and can confirm that my Superb III with 220tsi engine does the same thing, the wastegate rod is loose and rattles. So it could be the source of the noise, still confused as to why it only appeared today though so will take it to the dealers still for a check. Will let you know what they think / do, if anything :)

Another update:

Due to the nice weather I had my sunroof open on my way home this evening, and therefore decided to switch the air conditioning off (blowers still on, just A/C off). The rattle appeared... I pressed the 'auto' button to bring A/C back on, and the air con system hissed for a few seconds (usual I guess) and the rattle disappeared!

So it seems perhaps that having the air conditioning turned off causes the pipes to rattle maybe because they're not pressurised? Not sure as I'm not certain how it works but at least I have found the source.

If anyone else has a 220tsi it'd be good if they could try and reproduce the problem on their car to see if it's normal :)

I have this problem and am booked in with the dealer in a couple of weeks.  Don't normally have A/C on, but will do tomorrow and see what happens.

Thanks for this, look forward to hearing the result. Interestingly (only according to the trip computer) my mpg on the way home was no better with the aircon off, and I had it in eco mode too!

Good to know. Glad that is it solved.

Ok, two trips for two so far and it looks like you are right.  Will continue for a few days and see.  Least it gives some information to the dealer when it goes in, assuming they are prepared to listen to a customer....

Ah, glad it helped then, I will also mention it to the dealer when it goes in on Friday, along with a few other noises.

I'll update this thread when I know what they have(n't) done about it :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Had mine in yesterday for this issue and also the chrome strip.  They fixed the chrome strip but were adamant that the rattle was not to do with the pipes and that it must be a air vent or something within the dashboard and that they will need the car back for them to remove the dashboard and find the problem.

I did get the usual look and tone of voice of how could I know what is wrong with the car, drove out the dealership and the noise was present and then disappeared as soon as I pressed the AC button.  To me it does not seem like rocket science and to be honest another few journeys today and again no noise if the AC button is pressed for the AC to be on.

Stopped by our local family independent garage to book my fathers car in for an MOT and was talking to them and lets just say it will be off to them to have a look at and not back to Skoda.  I know that will cost me rather than having it fixed under warranty but I am very reluctant to be letting Skoda touch it again for this problem.
