Dipped lights for France

Featured Replies

Just returned from France and found that my worry for headlamps converters is unfounded. I had them in the boot just in case. I found that my 63 reg dips its lights straight downwards in front of the car with no pointing to the left and with equal light scatter on the left and the right. So Skoda presumably sets its lights so when dipped they are suitable for both left or right hand drive models.

Perhaps that's what non xenons do but xenon headlights have a definite near side extension. With maxidot you can switch between left and right hand driving and shutters in the light alter the beam. Very convenient!

Is it possible to do this with VCDS if you have the Xenons but don't have a MaxiDOT? I'm going to be going to Germany in the summer and not having to **** around with sticky things would be a real bonus.

Thanks.

On the MK2 FL Octavia, you have three options:

- if you have halogens, you need to adjust the shield manually on both headlights (flattens the beam).

- if you have xenons with maxidot, you should be able to enable 'travel mode'.

- if you have xenons without maxidot, a dealer/VCDS user should be able to set 'travel mode'.

Just to be clear, travel mode does NOT adjust the headlight beam pattern. It adjusts the headlights down/right to avoid glare and disables the dynamic cornering function.

For the pre-FL MK2 Octavia, you'll need to adjust the shield on projector (halogen and xenon) based headlights (flattens the beam). There is no 'travel mode' I'm afraid.

@edbostan, I'm not sure what car you have as your profile suggests a roomster and your post suggests a MK3 Octavia but we in the MK2 section.

Regardless of what you have, your car should have an ECE cutoff pattern with a flick up to the left for UK driving. If it doesn't, it's either already had the beams flattened using the manual levers or you have a problem. If you so have a newer car, it may use the GPS to automatically set 'travel mode' as described above. Might be worth adding what car ad headlight system you have :)
