Have you ever designed anything George?

Wino, Yes i have but not for commercial sale, but i was trained and served my time with proper engineers & technicians and journeymen,

and i know many others that do it professionally and who would never accept the failure rate that VW do, or their customers would not.

I worked for companies doing subcontracting decades ago where the Quality Control was a joke, like work for Texas Instruments, Halliburton and others,

doing Offshore Fabrication.

Many many people all just getting along with stuff that could cause deaths if not designed or produced correctly and as it proved some went fatally wrong.

Certainly VW are not as ethical as the Japanese especially Honda and Toyota. Maybe they are running so fast to 'Vorsprung durch technik' they dont have time to be ethical? Maybe Piech instilled this culture?

Everyone may laugh at Honda and Toyota for using engines for years, but its proven tech.

Sorry to burst the bubble glosrich. I'm Honda and Nissan master tech trained and I can assure you they are no different to any other manufacturer regarding issues. I've also owned several Toyota's and they have been a total disaster too with major problems with engines, gearboxes and water leaks. In fact my wife and I bought four Toyotas in one year and each one was a problem spending near two months each in the workshop with the same problems. We got considerable compensation for that. So never been back to Toyota. The Japanese issues you just don't hear about them as much as they are much much smaller over here than VW who are absolutely huge crossing over into 4 big brands and other more minor areas too. I'm definitely NOT a VW fan, but I am a Skoda fan, and there is a big difference. I will say this about VW though, they probably have the best marketing department in the world. Over the decades they made lots of people think they were the dogs nads for build quality and reliability. In fact that was completely false as the surveys showed. Although they're not bad now, they were in fact pretty damned awful 20-25 years ago and that showed in how reliable, or rather, how unreliable they were, how rusty they went, and how much water they leaked into the floorpan areas and how poor their security was. It wasn't until Skoda took over the manufacturing of many of the floor pans, gearboxes and some engines etc for them that reliability improved.

Estate Man, do you have a recording of this knocking noise you could share?

Gonzini, it is a different 1.2TSI from that in your Mk2.

I'll see if I can dig out a video of a start up. I think I still have one or two left somewhere. Originally I had over 80 start up video's showing the knocking noise. I'll blurr out the reg plate and post one IF I can find them. I deleted them in one fell swoop but I noticed a couple the other day on my phone I'm sure. As Awayoffski says though, it's the Mk3 1.2TSI 110ps engine. If yours is the Mk2 it won't be relevant.
