Octavia TDI Elegance

Featured Replies

Hi All,

This is my 1st post, I am looking to buy the above car on a 51 Plate - The question I have is how many miles do these cars do as it already has 150K on it & i'll be doing 15-20K a year. I plan on keeping it for 3 years. Would I be better off buying a lower mileage TDi SLX, If so what is the main differences between them?

Any thoughts would be great!!!

Cheers

Jason

Depends on how the car has been used. 150K on a 51 will be something around 31K miles a year. If that's all been motorway mileage, for example by a trade rep, the engine should be fine. But if the car's been used as a taxi with lots of stop/start driving and cold starts I'd be very wary. Also, check the service book to make sure it's had all the necessary work done on time.

Anything you can find out about the car's history will be useful, but do the obvious, such as checking the clutch pedal - if the rubber's worn off it's had too much use. And if the rubber's brand new it's because the previous one was worn off!

Generally you can get a good feel for a car from its overall condition - is the trim clean, are the seats still springy, is there any evidence of accident repair (overspray on the edges etc.), does it smell fresh and clean or foosty....?

And as a 51 it should have a couple of MOTs - check the mileage on the tests agrees with the current 150K figure.

Good luck!

I think I'd personally be looking at a lower mileage car, especially it needed to be reliable, as at 150k lots of things will be at or nearing the end of their life which could prove costly, especially when you're piling on 15-20k miles each year.....

I don't think there is much difference between the SLX and the Elegance other than the rebage.

I have an SLX and it has Climate Control, extra airbags, front arm rest etc.

I think the only difference is that they added extra traction control options to the elegance.

There is a SDi on ebay at the moment, which was a taxi with 219,000 miles on the clock.

As with anything if it has been serviced regularly and things replaced when needed then the miles shouldn't be a problem.
