Engine cutting out when driving!

Featured Replies

Hello

My 2011 2ltr CR Octavia TDI cut out on me last Friday. The engine just stopped while driving along the road. No warning lights / error lights on the dash. Nothing.

It would not re-start immediately - and the noise from it was very peculiar - similar to when the engine turns over really slowly when a battery is dying - but I have replaced the battery in the last 6 months, so nothing at all to do with that.

Eventually it fired up, but was on 3 cylinders. There was a terrible diesel smell to start with, which then turned to a 'gassy' smell, a bit like exhaust fumes, only stronger. It eventually cleared and the car was running on all four cylinders again.

Not sure if I would cause any damage driving very far in it (our local Skoda dealer is 40km away) I called the breakdown truck out, who took it to the Skoda garage.

I spoke to the dealer today, but they cannot find any fault - no error codes, etc - but are continuing testing it today...........

Coincidently, over the last couple of weeks, on 3 or 4 separate occasions, the car has 'shuddered' a bit, which I thought was due to driving in too high a gear for the speed, so changed down gear, which cleared it - not sure if this is related to the current problem, but could be, as its not something that has happened very regularly.

I had the car in for the emissions 'tweak' last October.

I also had the EGR valve replaced 2 months ago.

Has anyone any ideas as to what this could be?

I'm a bit reluctant to drive the car, especially on the motorway/ dual carriageway if this is going to happen again.

Thanks

Occi

It could be that something had been disturbed and its causing the problems you've got.
