Fabia ABS ECU problems

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm new here, and came across the site whilst trying to research a problem with my 52 plate 1.4 Classic.

My main reason for posting is to see if anyone can point me in the direction of some more detail on the recall on the ABS ECU problems (relating to the electrostatic charge from the wiring to the cooling fan). I think my problems may be related, so as much info as I can get hold of before going back to Skoda would be helpful. I'll throw out a few more details on the problems though, in case anyone is interested or can add some useful pointers.

The problem started on the first MOT of the car. It was driving beautifully, but on the MOT the ABS brakes failed with a 10%/90% mismatch on the braking. Clearly this wasn't the case when I took it in, but it seems the extra load of the testing showed up a weakness. Subsequent tests have not shown up the problem again, but ever since the ABS warning light has been on. Most testers don't show up an error at all, but the Bosch unit at the MOT centre does (it is matches the Bosch ABS unit), and this resets the warning but it returns.

The cause has stumped everyone who has looked at it, including the Skoda dealership where it came from! The last thing they tried was something that sounds as though it matches the description of the work done on the recall. I'm hoping this is related since then I stand a chance of reducing the impending

Welcome, there will be a solution on it's way soon, i'm sure.

Has the rework been done?

Something was done at around 6000 miles relating to the ABS. My initial information was that the ABS ECU was replaced. A more recent conversation has amended that to simply work being done on the ABS. This was before my ownership though, and I was unaware of any work being done until this extra information was mentioned from the Skoda dealership's own computer records.

OK, I've now spoken to Skoda who are going to speak to the garage and then get back to me. All I can do is wait and keep my fingers crossed.

I've found a bit more information out though, the work on the car was done at 600 miles, not 6000, and the car was only a month old. It was work on the ABS ECU though, so something wasn't right with the same bit that has now failed.

The 'fix' the garage has tried is the one related to the recall, although my particular car wasn't subject to the recall.

The question in my mind is whether this failure is related, in which case I hope Skoda do the decent thing and do the work for me. Either the car should have been recalled (was it missed or is this the same problem on a different revision), or perhaps the ABS ECU was replaced with one that was subject to the recall and hence should have been, but again was missed. By the sounds of it, if this failure is related to the recall, the fix done by the garage will merely stop it happening to the new unit rather than help this one, which has obviously already failed.

Fingers crossed I come out of this happy rather than feeling that I've had to pay out on a car that had a problem from new that should have been fixed under warranty. Even though my main car is a Honda Civic VTEC I rather like the little Fabia, and came very close to getting an Octavia for myself (I had been looking around for one, but having been saved in a crash by my previous Civic there was something comforting about going for the new one - particularly with the airbag setup on the seats).

Let's start with the good news - Skoda have agreed to pay for half of the cost of the new ABS ECU unit (as a good will gesture, just to be nice of course). On the bad news side of things, that still leaves me

Hmm, think I'll clear this duplicate post. Apologies, the server told me it was busy so I waited and hit the 'post reply' button later - and ended up with two! Could have been worse, I tried twice the first time!
