I'm struggling to understand the offset for my 2012 superb elegance 2.0tdi 18s

I'm looking at wheels to buy 

But they never match with the off set on my alloys 

Do they have to match ?

I'm trying to find 16 inch alloys

In short the lower the offeset number the farther out the outside edge will sit from the suspension strut. 

 

Forgetting rim size and width for a moment. A wheel with an offset of ET42 will have an outside edge of face of the rim that sits (poke) 8mm further out than a wheel with an offset of ET50. 

 

If you were fitting 7j rims vs 6.5j for example the above difference in offset may be welcomed.
