Strange Air con fault

Featured Replies

I have a 2008 Octavia 1.9tdi dsg elegance with intermittent air con

The problem is that the car will very rarely blow cold air! Sometimes it won't blow cold (when set to low) whatsoever.

When the car does blow cold air it keeps blowing cold, but most of the time it's as if I have pressed the economy button.

I regassed the car at work (525g of gas) and performed basic setting of the flap motors.

I'm assuming the compressor is fine because when it does blow cold it blows very cold without fault. Doesn't seem to make any difference if I set the system to a set temperature or set it to low.

It's so frustrating now the weather is warming up that my air con only works about 20% of the time.

PLEASE HELP WITH ANY SUGGESTIONS, I just hope that these issues are not the first symptoms of compressor failure.

Thank you for reading this

Have you access to vcds to see what  values are being shown? That may point to the issue as it may be a faulty temp sensor giving wrong readings.

That does sound like a temp sensor fault. A scan would show that. If you had a leak therefore no gas it wouldn't blow cold at all. Same if the compressor was broken. I've just had my aircon fixed which turned out to be a leaking condensor. I also thought the compressor had failed.

A new temperature sensor is only about £25 to £30. It's quite easy to change as well being at the front of the engine bay.

Are you talking about the high pressure switch which is at the front of the car?

Yes. Apologies it's a pressure sensor not temp. Known faulty part. You'd need a scan to make sure though.

I had a fault on my 07 Octavia where the AC worked really well when it worked but it would only work when the car was cool or after driving for a while. If the car had been left out in the sun for a while so it was very hot then the AC wouldn't work until the car cooled down or I'd driven for 5 minutes or so. Regassing didn't improve the problem. My dealer traced the fault to the AC compressor failing.

I bet it's the aircon's refrigerator sensor which controls and is responsible not to gather ice on there and it automatically deactivates the compressor in order to melt ice on the cells.

If this is broken then ice will block the system and freezes as a result in not blowing after cold air..

I will plug it in and post the results this evening, thanks for your reply
