VRS lost power

Featured Replies

Hi all

I have a 2003 VRS ASZ remapped to 169.0hp and 392nm. It has done 157k miles.

I have put 3k miles on it since February and it has been faultless until today.

I was driving along and came to a stop, as I pulled off it was struggling, I went in to neutral and back in to first thinking I had got 3rd accidently but no it was still sluggish. I got to 2k revs and changed in to 2nd and it started bunny hopping. It then drove fine for about 20 miles.

It then happened again as I was slowing down I went in to 3rd and then when I went to accelerate off it had lost all power it managed to get to 2k so I changed it  to 4th and creep up to 45mph so I went in to 5th and it eventually got to 50mph, and then was fine once I got to 50mph.  A couple minutes later the exact same thing happened so I put it in to 2nd and put my foot down to see what would happen, the revs just sat at 2.5k and did nothing.

I pulled over in a petrol station (lucky it was there) and put it in neutral, revved it and it revved fine. Drove around the station and it was fine. It then covered the next 25 miles without a problem.

Anybody got any ideas? No warning lights have come up.

Blocked fuel filter/ fuel line?

Did you notice any smoke?

I don't think any smoke came out at that time but I definitely saw some today when driving and accelerating moderately.

I have serviced it but I didn't have time to change the fuel filter but have a genuine vag one to fit.

Some of your symptoms would suggest a boost leak, but a leak wouldn't 'stop'. Once a pipe has jumped ship, it won't fix itself.

Might still be worth having a look at all the joints, most notorious ones are top pipe at the back of the head, or the bottom pipe going into the intercooler (remove offside wheel arch trim for easier access).

Alternatively, if it is due a fuel filter, replace it with the one you have sitting ready, see if there are any improvements.

I read the codes today and it had none also checked all boost pipes and they were fine.

Noticed oil around the egr, rocker cover and the filler so I am guessing it has high crankcase pressure potentially from a clogged up egr?

I am hoping to change the fuel filter on Thursday.
