DSG boxes

Featured Replies

have the diesels always been 6 speed wet boxes or have 7 speeds ever been fitted?

2.0 TDI is 6spd wet always due to the torque

The 1.6 always had the 7 speed dry.

The 2.0 has the 6 speed wet and the latest 2.0 also has the 7 speed wet box.

  • 2 months later...

I need some advice regarding DSG gearbox.

I have skoda superb II 2.0tdi semi automatic hatchback year 2012.

I was driving and it showed on screen (between speedometer) "DSG gearbox overheated" with warning red sign and warning tone. I pulled over and stop the car. After 30-40min I started the car, there was a horrible noise and car wouldn't move an inch further.

I first thought it's clutch as it's done 108,00 miles.

Obviously recovery van towed it to skoda dealers. Lads at skoda garage check it on computer and they says it the gearbox and I'm now stuck in the ocean.

Some says it's that electronic box on gear need changing and some says the whole gearbox with electronic box that sits in Dsg gear box.

To check skoda dealer said they will strip it down to find exact problem however they suspect it's the gear box and to strip it down it would cost £200-£300.

Can anyone advise who had similar problem? And what was done? It's a 6 gear speed.

Appreciate your help.

Anwar

Given that you are no longer covered under the manufacturers warranty has the Skoda dealer suggested that there could be any financial goodwill towards the cost of diagnostics and repair from either themselves or Skoda UK?

If not then get it out of there and to an independent gearbox specialist ASAP.

Don't know what to do.  Lookers offered no support. Lads were saying gearbox shouldn't go after 108,000 miles and skoda should contribute to this.

Is it that mechantronic or complete gearbox gone?

I don't think anyone can reliably say, especially without inspecting / dismantling as per the advice you have received. Fault codes could help but may not be conclusive.

Did you buy the car new? Is it used commercially?  Has it been serviced at Skoda / Lookers all it's life? In those cases, some goodwill expectation is more likely.

However, it will be hard to get any decision on goodwill before knowing exactly what the problem is. And to get to the problem you have to do some disassembly and investigation and that will leave the car in a partially disassembled state and undriveable. It also costs £££. You are likely to need to pay for for that diagnosis yourself without knowing the goodwill outcome. Goodwill itself maybe unlikely.

Personally, given how much a Skoda dealer will probbaly charge to sort this, (have they given a quote for replacement), you may be better to find a well reviewed independant transmission specialist, with DSG experience,  who can deal with it.

Or progress with the Skoda investigation. However, I would not base your decision on receiving a substantial amount of goodwill from Skoda UK.

You may have statutory rights (outside the warranty) under consumer rights against the dealer who sold the car to you. I.e. the dealer you bought from, assuming it was not bought privately.

Do u think it's the whole gearbox or that box only?

I bought it from Benfield (now lookers) as a used car. I did the dsg servicing with lookers like change dsg oil and filter. They haven't charged me for diagnostic but to strip it down, they said they will charge me to find out.

I got their details but I heard they offer no guarantee or warranty after repair

Yes ok. How long ago in time and miles? Well if they have to strip it to tell you what is wrong IMO that is part of the diagnostics! Either way, no matter what you call it,  you are looking at a charge to investigate further..

I understand Sir. I meant with diagnostic (connecting with terminals) and checking with codes.

I take that on board what you said. But if it's the box? Will new box work on old gearbox?

A used gearbox reconditioned any good?

Yes, if you can find someone selling reconditioned boxes that would be good. Others have used donor boxes from wrecked cars successfully as well. You do have to search out the specific box type code to get a full match on ratios and operation. Note: there is always a risk buying an unproven second hand box but sometimes it may be worth taking. If you can find a helpful garage or specialist who would agree to helping source it would probably be easier.

I went to another garage who does gearbox work and specialised in vw and audi. They said if i bring my car, they can check and if its a box (computer terminal I guess that's what they call or brain of Dsg gearbox) that sit's on gearbox, they looking around £850 plus vat and labor.

I checked reconditioned dsg gearbox with 12 months warranty.

I'm trying last attempt with skoda and lookers if they really can help as car was serviced and brake oil and dsg gearbox oil was changed by them last year.

There comes the point where you have to toss a coin and take a leap of faith.....

No.1 important thing when talking 6 Speed Wet Clutch DSG is that the Service Interval for Oil / Filter change of the DSG is @ 40,000 miles and costs about £175 at a Main Dealership,

that does not half save on Mechatronic Control Unit failures and Clutch Packs which is not a common failure on a DSG serviced to the manufacturers Schedule / Guidelines.

As to 7 Speed Twin Dry Clutch DQ200 DSG, then they are a whole different kettle of fish, or Synthetic / Mineral oil messes and World Wide Recalls. service campaigns / software updates etc.

Nice that Rest of World gets Warranty Extensions and not Home Market Europe....

You right. I have taken to another garage for second opinion. When engine is on it makes a garbage noise. Is it possible it could be dmf?

Dsg gearbox oil and filter was changed everytime car has done 40,000 miles by the skoda dealers. I feel it could be clutch or dmf ..not dsg gearbox.... as when starting the engine, i can hear a garbage noise....
