Columbus dead - partly

Featured Replies

This morning the radio died. Just went silent. No background hiss. The sd card and ipod still work fine as does the sat nav. It's coming up to five years old, does this mean a new unit and at what cost?

First thing, try a reboot. Turn it on and let it boot up fully, then press and hold (all at the same time) the left & right arrow keys (top left) and the microphone key (top right) until the unit turns off. Then it'll reboot, and see what happens then.

After that, it sounds like hardware failure, most likely the radio board. I can possibly repair it for you, or I can do you a part exchange for a DAB unit.

Thanks Rustynuts. I am away on business until Saturday.  I will try that when I get home.

Cheers

This happened to me the other day. Quick reboot sorted it out.

When you are back try to change the language. if unit is stacked with message "Desired language is being loaded" (more or less) then it is the problem of NAND chip. In 95% of cases it can be repaired with some special software called SetConfig.

Spoke to my wife last night and she went to the car to do what Rustynuts suggested and found that the radio is now working fine. Very strange.

Rustynuts - if it happens again I will try your solution.

thanks, Andy

Maybe being turned off for long enough was all it needed.

Used to happen on my SIIs as well, more so on the pre-FL model I had.  A reboot usually did the trick and there was nothing obvious wrong with the hardware or software.  It didn't happen often but when it did, it was usually after ending a call on the phone.
