VAG Emissions update or Contaminated fuel ? HELP

Featured Replies

Oh dear what a mess. Bare with me.

I started this thread a few weeks ago...

So I took my Yeti in for a service and at the same time the emissions software update was applied to the car.

When I left the garage I drove home (5mins) and parked the car at my house in France and did not drive it for a couple of days. I did not notice any problems driving back BTW.

The next time I drove it was to a garage to fill up and then back to Paris (where I half live).

On the way back to Paris the car drove like a dog. Rattly engine, bad timing and well it was just a nightmare. Googled when I got back about the emissions update and saw that other people have had the same problems.

Last weekend I went back (250kms) to the garage that serviced the car and applied the update. On the way back BTW it drove even worse. It was terrible.

The garage completely understood and said that they have already had 5 cars back under the same circumstances and they will sort it out. No probs. The appointment is this Friday.

So I left very happy, FILLED UP with diesel (that is the second time since the update) and drove back to Paris. Within 15 mins the car jumped back into life. It drove as well as it has ever done.

What is going on ?  Any ideas ? Contaminated fuel after the service ?? I have never had contaminated fuel before. I will take the car in as planned but....what do I say ?

Say exactly what you just said here.

Doubtful they meant the other 5 were exactly the same circumstances unless they were filling up at the same filling station as you.

So they mean they did the Fix and the car than runs badly.

The issues after 'The Fix' that some are having is now being well covered in the media and on forums, so not just drivers imagination.

Thanks for the reply.

Do I mention fuel ? My gut instinct it was fuel/fuel related but or is there something else at play here ? I put premium fuel in at the last fill !! Did that make a difference.

When we spoke to the head technician he understood the problem straight away and explained the complexities of the software upgrade. From what I understand, it is not the upgrade itself that is the problem. There is a lot of fiddling about to do afterwards.

But like I said, the car runs 99% perfectly now....so I guess that is a good sign.

Big headache.

As said, tell them everything. Otherwise they will be confused if it is running fine now, they need to know the full picture.

At least, given their experience of others having the same problem they know what to look for and check so they can still do that to verify if everything is OK or not.

The difference in using normal and premium fuel shouldn't make that much difference. I use it in the Yeti mainly because of the better additives.

Better using it and paying more if you know it has a higher Cetane.  The cetane does make a difference.

Is there someplace that shows that it has 'better additives' or lists what the additive / detergent is or does the advertising lead you to believe the additives are 'better'?

I've not researched it myself but from a number of different forums the concensus is that the premium fuels (mainly Shell and BP used by me) do have more additives and that is why I use it in the Yeti to help the EGR etc. and to try and keep the whole system  as clean as possible. I don't do that many miles anymore anyway so the annual difference in cost isn't that great and maybe I get better fuel consumption as some report, to offset the additional cost.

I also use premium fuel, but petrol, in my TT and motorbikes but that is more for the increased RON. Some seem to think that the premium fuel doesn't go off as quickly either which is beneficial for the bikes which get infrequent use.

Ask the guy what the other fiddling about involves. I was on the understanding that the fix involved plugging the car in, applying a new map and that's it.

Assuming there are other physical adjustments required might explain why some people experience no adverse effects and some people such as yourself, see a night and day difference in the way their car drives.

I said earlier than the car started to get better after the update but that was short lived. So the car went into the garage for the whole day. There is physical adjustments to be made after the software update. What they do is difficult to understand but they mess about with the injectors.

Anyway, the car is better know that it has even been. Even when it was brand new. Very very smooth to drive, much much faster acceleration and fuel economy seems to be the same. The update and any subsequent physical recalibration of the engine actually makes the car better if done properly.

Happy ending I guess. I might not now sell it. Cracking car the Yeti.

Great news.

But what is not so great is that dealers are doing the updates and adjustments (hopefully!) and not checking that the car's are running as well as they should.

I'm guessing  (unsurprisingly) that VAG are screwing the dealers down on cost/time and some are trying to get away with the minimum i.e. the software update and not much more. Hence some being OK after the fix and some not.

Have the mobile techs come out to you if you are having 'The Fix'.   What is all this stuff that Dealerships are supposed to be cutting corners on?

What is the 'Not much more' not being done?

I'd be really interested to know what the "physical" adjustments are.

Would it include installing new injectors?
