Advice on buying a VRS 2.0 TFSI

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I currently own a Polo GTI 1.4 TSI and was thinking of getting at some point a Octavia VRS. One of the things that is holidng me back is my knowledge of the VW TSI and TFSI engines and how prone they are to oil consumption issues.

Unfortunatley my Polo was one of the oil users but I managed to get the "fixes" done through warranty and so far so good it has been ok (touch wood). However I fancy a change but if I was going to change to a VRS should I avoid it or is the problem not as common?

The one I am looking at is this:

http://www4.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201705255806029?make=SKODA&fuel-type=Petrol&advertising-location=at_cars&radius=30&onesearchad=Used&aggregatedTrim=vRS&postcode=bs164pd&sort=distance&model=OCTAVIA&page=1

I would consider a diesel VRS but as I do very little mileage around town and don't use my car for work I would probably end up killing the DPF and/or injectors.

Is it worth the swap?

Looks like a nice car but expensive. There are some desirable options missing though - bluetooth, sat nav, maxidot, multifunction steering wheel. If you can live without those, I'd get a extended warranty for peace of mind.

Looks expensive to me. For comparison, I bought a 59 plate VRS with the same spec but with 60k miles for £6900, albeit privately. That was 2 years ago too.

The only thing that has that mine doesn't is the rear parking sensors.

I believe with 34k its probably priced average maybe low even albeit without the toys.

I personally would get one with maxidot and mfsw everything else can be added in later.

I like they give a 12 month warranty as standard

Good luck finding a vrs with MFSW.  I don't believe they were ever a standard option on the mk2 FL VRS.

Ha, probably why I never saw one whilst I was looking!  Didn't know that, thanks for the info

They're handy but definitely not essential, mine doesn't have one

Thanks for the feedback everyone. In terms of oil consumption, was there fixes like with the fabia that didnt involve a new engine?

I believe the main oil issues were the pistons/rings and I think that was resolved around or before 2012.

There's a few facelift VRS's on autotrader with mfsw and maxidot. As to the oil issue, bring it up with the seller as to what they consider to be an acceptable usage. Anything over that, warranty claim.

Just to clarify, with the DSG box you can have all the toys. Manual, maybe not.

Ah ok, so most likely I woudn't get that issue?

Is there anything else I should know about these engines?

I understand there to be potentially 3 main issues with these engines. Oil consumption, carbon build-up on inlet valves and timing chain tensioner failure.

The current K revision tensioner was March 2012, so it depends when the engine in your machine was manufactured.

AFAIR, there was a first change to revised piston/ rod and scraper ring design about the middle of 2011, so you should have a later design. I can't remember all the details they will be buried in detail in posts in this forum. It was an improved design with larger channels in the oil rings to be a bit more resistant  against clogging / carbon fouling.  I don't think it is a complete fix as it is an improved version of the original,  the possibility of oil consumption still remains as I understand it.

Certainly regular fixed servicing using quality oil and filter, no longer than 9k or 10k miles, is also regarded as helping resist problems.

The maxidot and MFSW came with FL DSG.

It is very hard to detect oil consumption at earlier stages, a lot of people who come on to these forums initially don't believe the car is burning it. Pulling the plugs out would help form a view, if they have not been changed by the selling dealer.

If you want a change and like the car, maybe the deciding factor is if they have a return policy within xx miles / months to protect you against getting an oil burner.
