vRS SE starting problems

Featured Replies

Heello guys,

Today my car did not want to start. It felt like the battery was flat but then started. As far as i know the car does not show any error codes, had one that was camshaft position sensor but got that replaced and when it was replaced got the battery and an alternator tested and everything was healthy. What i noticed when starting the car was the RPM needle does not move and one time it did not move for a second or two after the engine started. These problems seem to happen only on hot days. The engine sometimes shuts off for no reason but that has not happened in a month.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

Did it seem to be turning over more slowly? The 1.9TDi (all versions) is not supposed to inject fuel unless starter revs are over 250rpm.

Also, how hot is hot? (Engine bay temp rather than temp in shade for preference.) Starter motors do actually lose efficiency at high temperatures, like batteries do at low ones.

And have you had the starter connections checked and cleaned?

Yeah it did seem to be turnibg much slower than normal, i've no idea what the temp in the engine bay was but the termometer was showing 25 while driving, and no i did not check the starter connections :/

@Minjukas - Well, I'd start by checking the starter terminals then.

Also check the battery earth lead where it attaches to the strut turret.  Take it off and clean it, lightly smear it with petroleum jelly and refit.
