Idiots guide to replacing the rear wiper on Octavia estate?

Featured Replies

I'm just getting a clicking sound when I active my rear wiper on my '07 Octavia, so assume the motor has failed?

Just wondering if there is a step-by-step guide (for a novice like me) to replace the rear wiper motor on an Octavia estate?

Spotted that a genuine Skoda motor is £75 which seems a little expensive - are they better to use than the after market substitute or second hand ones? In terms of how long they will last for once replaced?

Lots and lots of posts on this subject, just put Estate Rear Wiper into the search box at the top right.

In summary, to remove the wiper arm, first remove the cap by placing your fingers under the sides of the cap at the arm end then pull the sides apart while moving your fingers along the length. What you are trying to do is to pull outwards to release two barbs which hold on the cap.

Once the cap is off you can undo the nut but will probably need a small puller to release the arm.

Remove the trim on the rear hatch to access the motor. See other posts for details. The rest is straight forward.

Once you have the motor assembly out you can either replace it or try to repair it. If you want to do that just undo the many screws to separate the two halves but make a note of the position of the mechanics.

I found two problems 1) the brushes were stuck in their holders and not making contact with the commutator so the motor would not run. I freed up the brushes and the motor then ran. Prior to brush failure I had a dry squeaky noise from the motor shaft. It is easy to pull out the shaft, clean and grease, and put it back making sure everything is in the correct position as noted earlier. In my case I am keeping the repaired motor as a spare.
