Cleaning your EGR and intake manifold

Featured Replies

I've got an octavia 1U with an ASZ engine.

I'm just over 100k miles now and wanted to clean the EGR and intake manifold (if it's overly clogged.. I haven't pulled it off yet).

What's the recommended method to get these cleaned up?

I'd prefer the least messy option as #1 I have to borrow a driveway and #2 I don't want to make a huge mess.

There seem to be a few posts about terracleans but it's snake oil IMO.

EGR sprays I'd like to avoid then you're pushing all the crap into the engine (thus the removal) plus that bit about revving it after with the boost pipe off.. of course you're going to get a cloud of black smoke.. you're running rich .

When I removed my inlet manifold and EGR valve, I messed about with loads of messy products, soaked it in fuel, WD40 etc, made a right mess but got it clean.

I have since been told (by a VAG specialist garage) that the easiest way to clean them is with a blow torch, set fire to all the gunk, but I have never tried it myself. Hopefully someone else can confirm this works ok.

Yeah.. I've started look at an air compressor if i'm honest with you. After you get the temps up you need to keep the air flow going to keep it hot.

Well.. crap. I'm not sure if this was pre/post cleaning. I forgot to check the intake manifold properly after shipping.
