Issues upgrading navigation map on Amundsen.

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Picked up my 64 plate MK3 Octavia 1.6tdi Black Edition Estate this morning and really liking it so far. It has an Amundsen system with Hardware code 041 and firmware 0435. The navigation map is also out of date being 2014/15 map. I went on the Skoda update site and downloaded the 2017/2018 map. I have also unzipped it onto a fat32 SD card.

From this point I am having issues. When I follow the instructions and go to the menu / system / information and update system, it says that there is not any files to update from. I have also tried to run the updated map directly from the SD card instead of the supplied Skoda SD card, and it keeps saying there is no database on it.

Am I doing something stupid?? I also want to update the infotainment software sometime soon, but I am not sure if there any new features worth upgrading for...

Thanks. Nick

1. You need to update and use the OEM supplied Map SD Card. There's a security feature that is set on the original card that does not appear on a formatted card. If you still have the unzipped map files then simply delete those on the map SD Card and replace them with the new ones. Just be certain you have the Amundsen folders/files and not the Columbus version as the latter won't work on your Amundsen.

2. If by updating the infotainment software you mean the firmware then that needs to be done at a Skoda workshop as it's done online by connecting the car to the Skoda server and you may need to pay for it. Firmware updates on the MiB are generally only needed if you have a problem with the infotainment, a recent example being a poor responding touch screen. A firmware update won't add new features.

Thanks Billy.

I have made a full backup image of the original Skoda SD card, so I can go ahead an use that.  Thanks for that. I will let you know if it works.

ok, it seems that the skoda sd card is not big enough for the new maps. The card itself is a 7gb card.

can I get rid of any of the maps? Do I really need Albania??

Thanks

The OEM card is actually 32 GB, but it's been originally formatted with a ridiculously large cluster size** - 32k IIRC.

Format the OEM card on your computer as FAT32. Formatting will wipe the existing files but not the security protection. It should bring the cluster size down to a more sensible 4k which will now show the card as just under 30GB*** and allow you to copy all the folders and files onto it.

If you have an .md5 file in your decompressed download you can ignore or delete it - it's a download checksum file that does not form part of the actual map data.

** If you're not familiar with the concept of clusters; clusters can only contain the data of one file. If your file is 6k and your cluster size is 32k then the cluster holds the entire 6k file while wasting the remaining 26k of unused storage. If you reduce the cluster size to 4k then the first 4k of your 6k file fills one 4k cluster and puts the remaining 2k into the next 4k cluster, meaning you only lose 2k of unused storage.

*** Drive manufacturers use decimal so they count 1,000 bytes as 1k whereas the computer use hexadecimal so 1,024 bytes is 1k, hence drives always appear smaller on the computer than the manufacturer's stated size.

I downloaded the latest update yesterday, formatted the card in fat32 etc,but late into the unpacking procedure, windows flagged up an error saying there wasn't enough room on the sd card,so i clicked ignore & went to bed, this morning it was still showing as unpacking,i'm going to give the card a try in the nav unit, but not hopeful

1- Save the content of your present genuine SD card on your computer

2 - Format your genuine OEM card using a cluster size of 8K instead of  standard 32 K (right click - choose cluster size - quick format)

3- Copy your latest update map (unzipped) at the root of your genuine SD card

4- Insert your genuine SD card on slot 1 or Slot 2 in your car's nav unit.

5- Run Update ==> (Menu - System - Informations - Update)

6- Enjoy...

On the Amundsen the data remains on the SD card, not copied to the internal memory.

On the Amundsen we copy on the genuine SD card (slot1) the new cartography ! thats'all ! Of sure data remain on the genuine SD card !!!

Best on a 32 Gb Sd card to format in 8K cluster size (4 K cluster size is for 8 Gb SD card)
