Air con issue ( sorry yet another thread ! ) help please

I've got issues in that the air con is no longer cold, it was last year, now if a/c selected the ' cold ' air actually seems to get warm ? I asked a local garage for advice and have been told the following......

pressure test £15 if passed extra £35 to re-gas 

BUT.......

" It's most like the evaporator as this is common on your car ( 1.9tdi 2009 F/L estate ) in which case it's expensive !! almost certainly not cost effective " 

REALLY !!......

Its not my place to question the engineer but having never used him before ( but he's has been recommended by long standing local garage I've used for years ) but I kinda got the impression he's quite happy to pressure test and re-gas if that's all that's needed but leak finding plus rectification " not worth it " 

 

any thoughts or advice please

Start with a pressure test and re-gas, ideally with some dye. If you have a leak it'll soon become apparent.

 

Don't think I've heard many problems with the evaporator.

 

Many people have replaced the condenser as it's prone to stone damage and I think some years had weak A/C pumps too.

Thats exactly my line of thought and deduction having read through various posts on hear on air con in general would the pressure leak include the dye or is that pumped in if the pressure tests fails ? ( in my local garage I have developed a mutual trust, in other garages I admit to having a cynical scepticism, so I like a little bit of ' what to expect ' knowledge )

I don't think a pressure test would normally involve dye. It's normally done by an automated machine that will see if the system can hold pressure and a vacuum for a length of time.

 

I believe dye is typically added with the refringent to catch smaller, harder to find leaks.

 

I'm not an AC expert but I'm pretty sure that's how it's gone for me in the past :)

Yes, when I had my system regassed the UV dye was added with the recharge process. So re gas is gas + Oil + Dye.  Done by the machine if I am remembering correctly.

You are correct, its all done by the A/C machine, they use nitrogen to pre test, well they did on mine when I replaced the condenser and compressor.

Thanks for info replies,

 

update 

had had pressure test done still has gas in system so no leak, the had diagnostic test done which states compressor has failed internally 

so will cost approx £400 to sort,

 

will NOT having the compressor replaced and not sellecting A/C for the foreseeable cause any further damage elsewhere ??
