Official dealer and brake calliper issue

Featured Replies

I've had problems with the offside rear wheel of my mk2 Octavia for some time now. It started with a squeal which I reported twice to the main dealer that I usually deal with. They stripped the breaks down, said they couldn't hear any squeal and I paid £82 standard charge. As soon as I get back in the car, the squeal resumes.

In January whilst the car was in for its MOT and service, the same dealer tells me that piston for same wheel is binding. I say replace what you need to. They respond by saying that they can free it by cleaning it up, so again I pay the £82 standard charge.

About 2 weeks ago, I notice this burning smell fro the same wheel which was very hot. I jack the car up and the it's binding. So I get the same dealer to look at it. They tell me that the handbrake cable is stuck. They also tell me that my front pads and discs need replaced. Total charge £402. I make a point of asking if the calliper is ok and they say it looks fine.

Today, 2 weeks after the car was last in with said dealer, I take the car for a long run. When I get home, I notice that there is again a strong smell and that the wheel is very hot to touch. I jack up the car (handbrake off and wheels chocked) and the wheel is definitely binding.

So so the dealer has agreed to take another look.

Am I right to be frustrated and annoyed by the dealer in this instance? If the calliper needs replaced(which could mean new discs, pads too), should I expect a contribution from the dealer?

I'd be very grateful for people's views and opinions on this.

So they have an incompetent technician, or workshop manager or very competent at taking money from you and not getting on with doing a decent job on your brakes.

Have you spoken to the Organ Grinder in the way of the Manager or principal dealer?

Once they get it sorted out without you paying them anymore maybe post up the Dealership name and location.

Yeah, all those attempts to repair maybe started out with the aim of being helpful but in the end have cost a lot of £££ and a lot of time and inconvenience. I think you need to be firm and nice but you have paid for this to be fixed, many times over and now it needs to be fixed. Probably for free or certainly no labour.

On the replacement pads and discs you could do yourself or at an independent for a fraction of the price. Or go to another skoda dealer. You may have lost a little confidence in this crowd.

I would go to independent as a Skoda caliper will be expensive and end up getting stung again.  Should cost no more than £120 to replace with £80 for a caliper and £40 for labour with an independent garage.

Probably best for me to try and find a good independent garage now. I live in Glasgow, if anyone has any suggestions.

Where have you been going Sir Arnolds or Henrys?

Henrys (north and south, south are the ones dealing with the calliper issue). Had an aircon service done by Arnold Clark and wasn't very impressed. Henrys north have been ok, but far from impressed with south branch.

I'd be very grateful for people's views and opinions on this. i think they have had you bent over forwards. it is time for them to bend over backwards. You need to let them know how you feel you have been treated.

Your experiences at Henrys are why the Dealership reviews on this forum in that section & other sections have some of the posts from members experiences recently.

You had best get in and discuss your issues with the Dealer Principal, and put them in writing as well.

The Directors of HENRYS MOTOR GROUP GLASGOW need to pay attention.

Maybe tell who you deal with at the top of the management to look on this forum and read the Dealers reviews because the Dealerships seem to be have serious issues with employees and the work being done and even possibly safety of the customers and general public.

Brakes are rather important, and the way that Trained or un-trained employees are turning out vehicles from the workshops is a major issue for

HENRYS MOTOR GROUP GLASGOW.

Just wanted to check as you have another, earlier thread on this, did you have the work done and pay this £402???

I paid £402 to have the 2 handbrake cables replaced and to have the front discs and pads replaced. This was when I'd put the car in complaining of the offside rear wheel being very hot, giving off a burning smell and clearly binding. All symptoms still prevalent when I dropped the car off at Henrys this morning.

Somewhat alarmed as my heavily pregnant wife has been driving the car with our 3-year-old son in the back for the 2 weeks since we got the car back with the calliper allegedly working fine. I made a point of asking if the calliper was working fine and they reassured me that it was. But it clearly couldn't have been.

Yeah, they've gone downhill. Last year, Henrys north spilled oil all over my engine during a routine service and thought not to tell me. Both branches seem understaffed. I originally tried to get the car into the north branch, who said they couldn't look at it for nearly 3 weeks due to the amount of emissions recalls. I found that disappointing as brakes are safety critical and it felt like they should have prioritised me accordingly.

The problem is I'm inclined to go in with all guns blazing, so I make a conscious effort to gather opinion and put together a rational argument before I raise the issue.

When I first got mine I had squealing brakes when braking and also reversing out of the drive. I already read on here about all the faulty calipers being reported but having done my own brakes for many years I know that calipers don't just fail. On removing the caliper it is a relatively common Bosch type found on many Fords. The usual brake dust and grime build up but two things were evident and that was no grease on the sliders, also missing from the metal tab edges and back of the pads  (the pads also didn't have an anti squeal sticker on the back of the pad either). The other, bigger, problem was the pads tabs were very badly finished. These were the original pads. The rough edges and burrs made them very tight in the holders so they wouldn't release properly after pressure had been released. No amount of grease would help them move freely so had to resort to filing the edges down until they would fit nicely in the pad holders. Applied grease to the tabs and rear of pads and fitted the back into the cleaned up pads holder and refit the caliper. The brakes felt much better straight away and the squeal never came back. When i posted my findings on here there were a few others who had cured their brake squeal by filing down the edges on the pads until they fitted correctly.

As others have said this poor work from the dealer. Do the job yourself or take it to an independent to do the job right.

On the lookout for a good independent dealer to take it to. I live near Glasgow if anyone has any recommendations.

I've watched several YouTube videos on how to replace brake components, but can't work up the courage to try it!

I have always tinkered with cars but never on critical areas like brakes. When the garages started charging silly prices for poorly done labour along with huge markups on parts I had to start doing the work myself as money was tight at that point. Armed with a Haynes manual and the right tools I did my first set of brakes, it took me best part of a day mainly double checking and reading and re-reading the manual. Same job now takes around an hour and most of that is getting the tools out and away again. With videos it is much easier to do these jobs yourself so don't be afraid but only do them if you have the right tools including axle stands.

I'd gladly help anyone do the work themselves so they know how to do the job correctly. Not sure if you have someone on your street who is handy with the spanners to show what to do?

The back street garages are probably your best bet if you're not doing it yourself. They tend to stay in business by doing a good job and not having fancy waiting areas with free coffee machines.

Needs new calliper as predicted. Henrys have agreed to replace it for free. Hopefully this is the end of my woes. They admitted they haven't been great with things, but doubt that I would go back there.

Saloon, Hatch or estate? Spec??? Manual or DSG?

My rear brakes TRW 255mm discs 38mm dia piston, but pre f/l. With the full info someone else should be able to confirm, or not, but i am fairly sure yours will be the same size, as yours is not the vRS. Spec may still make a difference.

However, correct size or not, i would recommend fitting a new caliper if you are not familiar with these..............just my opinion.

Hope this helps.
