New Skoda Octy Mk1 4x4 owner

What battery do I need to. . .

Just kidding. I have just picked up a tidy Mk1 4x4. I have always wanted a petrol turbo 4x4 and one that looks like a taxi is extra appealing!

I hope to sort a build thread soon although as I am tapping in to my inner chav for it I can't see it being popular!

Anyway, this forum has already been very helpful so thanks for all the knowledge.

Hi @Xiled50 thats the one I started with, well that model. 150 by default, a stg 1 remap took it to shy of 180, give or take. With the haldex it was better on real roads than the vRS. On a trackm the vRS did frequently shuffle past ;) better drivers at the time too...Eventually though I did swap it in for a vRS.

On the 4x4 I did the suspension, put KW v2's on. After I sold it I realised what I should and would of done given the chance again, and thats the roll bars. I say this after doing the rollbars on the vRS and that transformed it nicely on stock suspension. I suspect if the same on the 4x4, it would of been much nicer and probably perfect with the suspension work.

Didn't bother with huge brake upgrades, just ran ds2500's with good fluid, stopped me quick enough for the sensible use cases ;)

Lots of fun had and for you to be had.

Thanks for the advice Colin. I would love coilovers but my budget is springs at the minute. Although finding them is harder than I thought it would be.

I will definitely take a look at the roll bars thanks.

Did you ever use a Haldex controller on yours?

:) I should of been more explicit, the coilovers were a false prophet mod, sure they helped, but he 4x4's curse is the body roll... I think springs and rollbars would be more effective... but I learnt that only after selling it :( At least rollbars are easier to fit and test.

I didn't mess with the haldex, just left it stock. Never concerned me enough to alter bias or settings.

That's really helpful thanks. Did you find anywhere specific that caters for the 4x4 Saloon suspension?

Sorry for all the questions, I had assumed wrongly that the estate and saloon would share the same setup.

No, not specifically, I had the estate. I seem to recall Stuart had the hatch. You'll need to head back into the very early parts of the site for some good intel. Either hit the octavia MKI forum and go to the last page and work back or google search ( click search above in the grey nav bar ) not the one in the black. This takes you to https://search.briskoda.net, stuff like cannonball should keep you inspired :)

https://www.briskoda.net/forums/profile/123-stuart_j would be my go to :D @Stuart_J forgive me I can't recall if you had the hatch... @DGW may of had a hatch...maybe, frell my brain is knackered.

It's also different from the vRS, as the vRS est differs from the hatch, which I think yours will be, it just looks like a saloon?  But some things will be ok, airboxes etc.

Brains Doing Ok, it was many years ago

Mine was a Hatch & ended up heavily modified

Re Antiroll bars the ones off the R32 fit, there are 2 diameters, get the thicker ones, I had the R32 on the front & Jabbasport built me a bespoke one for the rear as it saved modifying ( read beat with a hammer ) the spare wheel well to fit the rear but everyone else I knew at the time who did the mod slightly changed the shape of the spare wheel well

For suspension I ran KW Variant 3, I tried the 2 but found it had a habit of a nasty rebound occasionally when taking undulating roads at naughty speeds .

Power ended up at 352, kept at 1800 cc but ran S3 Pistons & from memory forged rods, Turbo was upgraded using the IHI & bespoke manifold, again from Jabba, they managed to wring I think 225 out of the motor on the std Turbo so worth a chat to them about remaps if thats all you want to do, Gearbox came from a TT . The std box has shorter gears than the VRS  & I found myself on the limiter in top once it was tuned, If you arent going for big Power the shorter geared box will give you better acceleration than the VRS but give a slightly less economical car . Initially we fitted the VRS gear cluster into it which gave a better top end but the Increase in Power ate 3rd one day, Hense swapping for the TT box which has stronger gears, I think it needed a shorter drive shaft one side which came s/hand off an Audi S3

if you are pushing the power you may need to upgrade the clutch, I think initially we fitted a clutch from a Corrado but once the bigger turbo was fitted that was quickly eaten

For Brakes I ran AP 4 Pots 335x32 with DS2500 pads which were squeezes inside 17" wheels, kit built by Ian Godney at Godspeed

Interior I swapped from a Golf , cant remember the model but the seats were Recaro full leather & black so looked OK with the std door cards, Steering wheel was the leather one out of a L&K Mk1 Octy, If youi switch that DISCONECT the battery whilst doing it, it eliminates the slight risk of the airbag going off which would be a tadge exciting, If your not really confident get a garage to do that as it has to be right incase you have need of the airbag one day

Jabbasport did 95% of the work on the car so if you have any technical questions or want work done I would recommend them

If you trawl back through the threads I posted most of it at the time, its a car I really regret selling & have a couple of times tried to find it to buy back with no success

It was built specifically to do Cannonball runs, did 4 & managed a second, the joy of beating so called supercars was a joy, I can remember going into Italy flat out side by side with a Ferrari 360, I couldnt beat him but he couldnt beat me, the speedo was starting its second lap, was past the trip window & heading back up. In the twisties it was more than  a match for anything

  • 2 weeks later...

Stuart, sorry for the late reply. Thanks for the really helpful post. I have ordered front and rear anti-roll bars and springs. I don't think I will get to 352 but let's see!
