Chain or Belt?

Can anyone confirm if the latest 1.2tsi petrol yeti has a chain drive or cambelt? My dealers says it's a chain but I had understood that due to noise and other problems the chain drive has been discontinued in favour of a cam belt.

The later 1.2s have a belt.

That's what I thought! Worrying that my dealer says definitely a chain after consulting his service dept!

I've always found that a black plastic side cover is an indication of a belt, because the ran 'dry' but now even belts may be lubricated.

Well I contacted my dealer again and they insist the 1.2tsi is chain driven rather than a belt. 

I had understood that there was a problem with the chain drive some years ago and a recall. Now using a better chain. So does anyone have a newish 1.2tsi who can confirm either way chain or belt!!

I think your main concern should be your dealer! If he doesn't know the later 1.2 was belt rather than chain then don't let him near your Yeti.

Unless, of course, it is an older model with chain. One simple check is whether you can see the oil filter on the left front towards the top of the engine, if you can see it then it's the earlier chain engine.

Well, I insisted my dealer contacted Skoda UK with my VIN number and get a definitive answer. 

Surprise surprise (or not), Skoda confirms the car has a Cambelt rather than a chain!

My contact at the dealership spoke to his service dept and relayed the info and certain people were very shame faced. 

If only one had a service sheet indicating maintenance items etc , that would help in future service planning! Electronic service records are hopeless as I have found with my MB.

It has been found time and time again a lot of dealers do not know what they are talking about, very worrying.

From personal experience one of the major downsides of ownership of my vehicle has been the dealerships. It can take days or even weeks to get routine servicing carried out as they have to contact ŠUK or ŠCz to confirm when certain items require maintenance; Haldex oil change and my cambelt being just two examples where the information they initially gave me was subsequently found to be incorrect. 

 

Several of my Škoda servicing printouts identify my vehicle as a 140 CR, (it's actually a PD) , ELEGANCE Scout. I've not read any UK brochures where it is listed as that. 

 

And according to the Škoda website you can entrust your vehicle in the safe  hands of a Škoda Technician......

If it's not in the inspection/replacement schedule it's designed for the life of the engine, like a chain.

'Spares' would have a parts listing you'd think.
