Engine Management Light ON for 2 Years

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've had a Skoda Octavia vRS since new (2001) and for the last two years the engine management light has been on and it's been back to the garage more times than I can remember. Some of the faults have been:

  1. Coil Pack
  2. Cam Shaft
  3. Throttle Body
  4. Throttle Body Sensor
  5. Cam Shaft Sensor
  6. ...on and on and on...

The performance doesn't appear to be effected too much but it's been so long that I'm struggling to remember what it was supposed to be like.

Now I don't want to name the offending garage for their less than stella performance at getting the problems fixed and getting to the holy day when the light is off but I do need to know if anyone can recommend a garage in the befordshire/hertfordshire area (if you name my garage I will say though)

Looking forward to some recommendations.

If you dont mind popping over to Milton Keynes i'd be more than happy to take a look for you.

Regards

Ross

Cheers for your quick reply Ross.

Shouldn't be a problem as I work about 20mins from MK.

Waiting to see if the replacement cam shaft sensor the offending garage have ordered cures it, if not I'll be down to you in a shot.

Just out of curiosity is the cam shaft sensor a part that's difficult to get hold of?

I'm sure Ross will be able to sort it. I had problems that baffled 3 dealers, yet 4 hours in Ross's care and all is well.

Good luck with a fix mate.

I'll be calling the garage tomorrow to book it in. The other garage can stick it, they've had more than their fair share of chances.

If your free saturday morning pop down and i'll have a quick look for you.

will be there before 11am if that's ok. I've got to drop my son off at MK train station just before

Ok, you might have to hang about depending on what i got on if thats OK, ill try and fit you in.

yeah that's fine. If you can't fit me in then I'll just make an appointment while I'm there. It'll be no trouble because my wife wants to have a look at the shops in the shopping centre and my son needs to catch the train.

Thanks Ross, see you Saturday.

No problems :)

Hopefully we sorted this problem today. :)

It would seem that when the cambelt was done previously by another dealer they got the timing wrong, cam was advanced one tooth (crank is on TDC)

Seems to be alot happier now. Also fitted three new coil packs as they seem to have been missed at the 40k.

Ross m8, can I pop over as well....mine doesn't quite look like that under the bonnet any more but what the hell if coils are being flashed about. :D

Coils were covered under warranty (and should have been when this car had done 40,000 miles when they should have been updated to the later spec).

Its a case of the dealer putting in a claim to Skoda now and they decide if we can change them or not.

Spoil sport. :P

Altogether a bit shoddy by a previous dealer then.

I see from the sig that the GT has been sunning itself under your workshop lighting today :D

Everyone makes mistakes, and i wouldnt want to say our dealership is any better than any others. But given the fault codes this car has this fault was quite obvious.

Well I thought I'd just say thanks to Ross and the guys at Pillings.

I'm not gonna name and shame because like Ross says everyone makes mistakes.

All I can say is that I'm more than happy with the results and would recommend their after sales to anyone in the area

I get the excact same error af you after a cambelt change

17748 P1340 Crankshaft-/Camshaft Pos.Sens.Signals Out of Sequence

Did you engine run fine even though it was advanced one tooth? Mine does but I will have the belt double checked tomorrow. Cant be a fault in the sensor can it? Even though http://www.briskoda.com/forums/diagnostics-vag-com/dtc17748-detected-1-8t/13833/?mode=linear suggests that sensor can just die.

Input needed..

Regards, Martin

I doubt a faulty sensor will give a correlation fault.

It runs fine but perfomance is flat as mentioned in this thread.

And unless you are having problems can you please stop posting multiple times.

I think we have found the error yesterday:mad: We then put the cambelt right but havent gotten rid of the CEL yet cause I dont have a VagCom.

But I think we have found the error.

A good result - assuming that VAG-COM clears the error code. Fingers crossed...

Yep looks like you were one tooth out.

Post up your location or check the thread entitled VAG-COM map and someone nearby should help you.

Its tough being right all the time you know ;)
