Home automation thread

Featured Replies

Just took a dip into home automation with some TP Link smart plugs which are running a couple of lamps.

I went to look at smart light switches but they all seem to be long and narrow like US light switches and won't cover a square UK switch.

Anyone found a good one? Also has anyone replaced a two gang switch with an automated equivalent?

Any other good suggestions for home automation?

Home Automation- HMM- I've had it for over 40 years. I married her, and she took over. it might take an automatic washing machine, or a dishwasher ( mine won't have one in the house) , to help out, mine has managed for over 40 years/ four kids /lots of jobs and looks on home automation programs as a lot of junk.

TBH- I AGREE - I'd suggest that home AUTOMATION designers have not consulted the EXPERTS in this field- WORKING WIVES.

BTW- way back in the 60's , our kids at young ages could count to 4/5  AT EARLY AGES. They'd learned to count via the TV remote. Their favourite program was on ,say BBC2, ( BUTTON 2)  on the TV/REMOTE- they soon worked out which button set the TV to let them watch this.

Your best bet is the Philips Hue system which uses wifi bulbs wirelessly connected to a 'bridge' and is HomeKit compatible, controlling all your tights (MAX 50 bulbs)

You can also opt for a Remote controlled heating thermostat, like Hive or nest and is operated by an app.

I have Hue and Nest and are easy to operate.

  • 5 months later...

Also look at free applets via IFTTT (If this then that) the app is available on play store and itunes. Brings alot of functionality to basic automated hardware.
