better turbo

Featured Replies

got the car back today with new turbo fitted have to take it easy for 200 miles then advised to red line it about once a week through 1st 2 3 4 , told its the only way to keepturbo working 100% not really looking forward to that worried thing might blow up must admitt dealership very good. 110tdi.

I think thats a load of bull. The turbo will be working just as hard at 4000rpm as it will at the red line. Actually I dont see why you'd need to do that at all - you wouldnt do that with an all new car.

believe me i was shocked with what mechanic said his thoughts were you must open right up now and then to make cam in turbo open all the way if you only take it 80% of the way as time goes on it will stick at that point im more to agree with you at 4000

Do you really have to run in a turbo?

For sure I can understand the need to do this when you have had internals sorted.

What sort of wear do you get on a turbo....a part from turbine?

Hmmm...maybe I should be more careful with the big ball bearing in mine.

Mine gets a regular redlining - maybe once every couple of hundred miles - must do it good occasionally. ;)

Personally I'd find it more important to warm up the blasted thing a bit first before trashing it, but that's just me :P

Why making the turbo work as hard as possible is considered a good thing I'm not sure, assuming the gaskets were replaced properly and nothing leaks, it should be fine anyway, and if it isn't it's straight back to the dealer anyway.

Seems like very odd advise though

A Turbo needs to have a nice supply of clean warm oil before putting it under maximum load. Why did your old turbo fail? Perhaps the mechanic suspected it was through too gentle use? What will you tell the police when they spot you red lining it in fourth gear? I know that I will be in big trouble getting caught red lining my car in fourth!
