2014 CARS Diesel Estate Advice

OK but you get my point that more diesel cars will be banned than petrol cars due to the higher pollution rating of cars of the same year.

There's no point fighting against the Green lobby, they have the ear of media and Governments so what they want (restrictions of vehicle usage) they will likely get.

if you look at the actions of this government, then you will see that the Green Lobby don't have their ear.

They had to be taken to court to publish the Clean Air white paper.

Green taxes on our energy bills have been removed.

The emissions based car tax regime has been removed.

Solar subsides have been slashed.

Hinckley Point nuclear power station being built will massive government guarentees

etc.

and I think Brexit will only make it worse, due to most of the current regulations being part of EU regulations, not UK ones.

But the point of my original post, is that basing a decision between diesel and petrol on the possibility of a future tax which nobody knows any detail of is futile. What may happen instead is that government taxes all non hybrid / electric engines or do something else.

And given the size of the diesel car / van / hgv fleet any increase in taxes will have to take time. The van / hgv fleet don't have real alternatives at the moment.

I don't think much will happen until the cost / range / recharge time of hybrids and ev improves as well as the surrounding infrastructure. Once that happens then it will be a real push against both petrol and diesels. In the mean time there will be a push to probably remove older diesels say Euro 4 or less.

We'll have to agree to disagree on that one.

Fair enough

The sad thing is if this whole diesel tax does come into affect or they have some sort of ban is the old vehicles will be taken of the road. Hopefully they will change there mind.

After reading some of the posts, I understand that the diesel VRS may not be the best choice but after doing a search on auto trader, the closest TSI model to me is over 98 miles away, slighlty cheaper and doesn't have the same kit. Too many people bought the diesel model :D

There only trying to get the really old and dirty ones off the road, from what I can see, the Euro 1,2,3 cars that are pretty smokey when pushed hard.

The Octavia 3 TDi are all Euro 5 & 6 so won't be affected for at least 5 years, probably a lot longer as they are pretty clean with the DPF. Less particulates than many petrols.

Something has to be done as the air quality in a lot of cities is dangerous at peak times and it is harming us.

@Black_Sheep just after your post I've searched and realized EA288 engine has timing belt, not chain. I was thinking vice versa. What is the change interval, the one posted looks very long..

Does anyone know if this engine on Skoda has balance shafts?I've read that some releases it has but in Skoda the don't exist

"Balance Shafts
One version of the 2.0L TDI engine has a balance shaft
system to reduce crankshaft inertial forces inherent in a
straight four-cylinder engine. The balance shaft system has
two countershafts rotating in opposite directions at double
the speed of the crankshaft"

Best person to ask might be Oliver Schmidt.  you should get him care of the US Justice Service / Prisons.

VW sometimes do not know what they have in the way of hardware or software in different engines.

@Awayoffski Thanks! The guy described it well.

He was the one that was with Paul Willis VW UK CEO giving evidence to the Transport Select Committee,

and then this week was pleading guilty in the US court to lying to the Authorities doing the VW Emissions Scandal Investigation.

Vorsprung Durch Technik.  Take anything they say with a pinch of salt.......  Lying is part of the VW culture.
