Is fitting wider tyres, eg. 225 to a vRS a modification that should be declared to the insurance?

I need some new ones for the front and would like a little extra grip as they struggle to drive and steer at the same time.

I don't see why it should be an insurance issue, after all, the wider the tyres, the better the grip and you're much safer with them no?

You'd think so, but fitting better brakes and stiffer suspension must be declared.

-The insurance company look at it from the angle of "If you're making your car handle and brake better you're going to be using the extra handling and braking...."

ANY modification to your car whatsoever needs to be declared. You would soon find out if you were involved in an accident and a scrupulous inspector checked your specification with the manufacturers one. I've had a friend who was caught out by this, Beware.

Another thing to keep in mind is the speed rating etc, deviating from it (downwards) will probably cause grief in that sense too.

I'd definitely give them a buzz, find out what their policy is before buying the tyres. Wider tyres don't give more grip necessarily anyway, in the dry they tend to but in the wet they may actually make things worse.

They're unlikley to have a lower speed ratung, but that's something I'd always check.

In the wet it's going to struggle whatever tyres are fitted anyway. I'd like to try some wider jobbies on the front to see how much better they are.
