2015 Passat BiTdi Estate

Featured Replies

I've wanted to write a little something here about my current daily driver for a while now as this particular variant is quire scarce.  So here it is.  First a little about  I in no way claim to be able to drive fast very well as some on here do, or handle a car "on the limit".  I do however try to drive with good roadcraft and like to press on where the opportunity allows.  My previous cars were a Mazda 6 Estate (180) and a MK1 Fabia vRS.

The Car

2015 Passat BiTdi Estate, GT spec.  64 plate.  I suspect it was a demonstrator/dealer principle as it was registered a couple of months before the first owner had it ...... Spec includes;

  • 7 Speed DSG
  • 4 Motion
  • Discovery Pro Nav
  • LED lighting pack
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Acoustic Glass
  • Heated Windscreen
  • Heated Steering Wheel
  • Napa Leather
  • LED Premium Headlights
  • Black Pearlescent Finish.

Performance.

It's the quickest I've ever owned.  6.3s for the benchmark sprint.  What really impresses is the way i can just plant the right foot and the dsg/4 motion takes care of everything, completely compensating for my lack of talent, never spinning the wheels despite 500Nm of torque.  The acceleration is almost CVT like.  On the move the car doesn't seem as quick as it is but there is more than enough on tap to make quick work of overtaking or get out into a motorway gap.  Naturally Sport mode is much quicker to kick down than Eco.

Handling

Really not my area.  It feels very reassured and planted.  When pressing on on B roads, unless sport is selected on the DCC which firms up the suspension it can wallow and roll a little in the corners.  I'm 100% confident with the 4 motion my confidence will run out before the grip does.  Wet/mud not an issue.  Ultimately, if you want a car for throwing around corners then this probably isn't for you and whilst there are I'm sure better cars in the class for handling I would probably go for something smaller/lighter altogether.

Comfort

Masses!  Easy to cover huge distances and still feel good at the end, exactly as you would expect.  Electric seats with good lumbar support.  Soaks up bumps on the road without any drama.  GT seats have good side support which I like.  When I test drove the Superb even the L&K seats didn't come close for support (Although the Sportline seats were great).  The stop-start can be quite rough when re-starting sometimes.  A huge amount of tech to make a journey more pleasant.  The LED lights make the Xenons on my last car seem like candles.  Great space in the back and the boot, on paper only 10L short of the Superb Estate.

Economy

40mpg (brim to brim) for my commute over the last 4 months.  45mpg on a long run.  Spirited run (by my standards) cross country gives low 30's on the trip computer.  Not had to have it serviced yet although shouldn't be any more than any other Passat.

Other

Not a lot really... stop/start makes getting out at junctions a little hesitant so I switch it off.  Adaptive Cruise tends to drive up to the back of the car in front and then brake....... I tend to leave a bigger gap and ease off earlier.  Car-net doesn't seem to like my HTC.  DAB radio is great however the speaker quality isn't as good as the Bose speakers in the Mazda that I got rid of.

Have I forgotten anything?  Please feel free to ask.
