Best way to diagnose door alarm LED

Featured Replies

Hey all

Picked my car up after it had been in for repairs and upon locking/unlocking the car I've noticed the door LED shows no signs of life. I've done the 'waving arms like mad inside window' trick and yes, this activates the siren and hazards. I never thought to actually check this when signing the hand over paperwork so I actually feel pretty stupid now.

A new siren/controller got fitted a few months ago and since then the system has been absolutely fine. It's worth mentioning the repair centre had to fit a complete new door so I'm a tad suspicious that perhaps a connector has come loose or something that they have done. Unfortunately, I have no VCDS or any facility of that sort. I doubt it's the door controller or any electrical gremlins but I'm by no means an expert on car electrics.

Could it be the LED has just packed in? A little bit of a coincidence it decides to give up the ghost when it's had work done on it and been out of my possession/use for over a week.

I've sent them an email kindly requesting a call first thing tomorrow as I feel this is not my responsibility to fix.

A little niggle you might say but I certainly didn't take the door off the car or do any work. I wonder if the wiring loom has been interfered with. Is there anything else I can do to try to narrow down what it might be or to cover myself in case they play silly buggers or refuse to sort it?

Was I right to contact the repairer?

LEDs are normally very reliable if not abused or subjected to over voltage e.g. 12 volts direct without a resistor.

I would say that as the problem only occurred after it has been repaired then it is the repairer's problem to sort it out and not yours.

Can you actually see, or feel, that the LED is actually fitted to the door?

Did the change over the door controller and door lock when swapping doors?

This is something I'm going to have to ascertain. I take it this could be a potential reason/issue?

I've spoken to them today and they have accepted the door LED needs fixing at their time and cost. I will also get a reimbursement on fuel for the unnecessary travel. I made it clear I don't want to waste my entire Saturday whilst some numpty messes around with wires etc. I'll be making sure they give this a proper check and crack on with it as soon as I arrive.

To be honest, the guy on the phone took it rather well and surprisingly I managed to keep my cool and maintain the moral high ground. Lately, this car seems to be giving me nothing but grief but it's just down to bad luck. People are worse off I suppose and have far more complications when it comes to cars.

This has been checked and yes it's fitted alright.

Just remembered that I had the same problem on my Mk 1 Octy.

When putting back the door card it is easy to disconnect the LED wiring when wiggling the door card into place.

Don't know if the Mk 2 is the same but you may be lucky and find it just needs the wiring plugging in again.

Are you referring to the plastic trim? I don't have one of them removal tools. Is it an easy job to do?

I may have a go at this and see if I can sort it myself.

No, I  mean the trim panel on which everything on the door is mounted. You will need trim tools to loosen the bottom and sides  and will also need to remove arm rests etc. so best done by your mechanic.

If you look closely you can seen the trim (aka door card), at the top, it appears to hook over into the window aperture. When refitting this top edge on the Mk, I found that if you waggled the trim from side to side then you could release the LED connector as the wiring is a bit tight. I am making the assumption that the Mk2 could be similar.

A up mate all sorted you were right. The connector came loose so they snapped it back in to place. Really glad it's sorted now.

Thanks. Hopefully, I'll have some trouble free motoring now.

Glad to pass on my experience. Hope it helps others too.
