Boot not unlocking

Featured Replies

Boot didn't unlock on its press handle above the numberplate this morning. The doors did.

Checked some back threads on here and it would seem I have a failed drivers door microswitch. Lights on buzzer and courtesy light not activated by drivers door opening. Courtesy light does work for the other three doors. Boot opens if I open one of the other doors.

Question. Where is this drivers door microswitch fitted. I had a look for the old fashioned mechanical door jamb button switch, costing about £1.50 and taking 2 minutes to replace if it wasn't repairable on the kitchen table. No such luck.

The microswitch is clipped to the outside of the drivers door lock unit inside the door. The switches never used to be available meaning you would have to replace the whole lock unit, but now they can be purchased on ebay - part number 3BD998786 for drivers door.

You would need to cut the old switch wires and join the new ones on. The door ancillaries carrier has to be removed to access and remove the lock unit. It's not a five-minute job.

I did mine using a similar microswitch because the proper ones weren't available at the time. It's still working nearly three years later.

I hate doors, window mechanisms, door locks and door cards with disintegrating trim clips. Do VAG make it all so complicated just to make the jobs almost impossible. Anyway new lock fitted. A little more skin from both hands sacrificed to sharp metal edges.

Checked the loom across the hinge and only one wire has the insulation cracked and the copper is good so just insulated. All working again. Courtesy light and lights beeper active.

Pretty much a days work.

Interestingly the microswitch is working fine. There is wear on the plastic cam connected to the latch mechanism and a little on the microswitch plunger. Result, it no longer gets pushed enough to break the circuit. A new lock was the only solution. A new microswitch would have been a very temporary solution.

The worn bit is at about 9 o'clock. The two round holes at 8 and 10 are the holes for the locating dowels on the microswitch.

Yes the plastic on the cam can be shot. It's just plastic covering metal. I removed the plastic on mine as it was shredded. However, I wasn't using a standard microswitch as a replacement. Might not have worked with a standard one due to the extra gap caused by removing the plastic. I lubricate it regulalry which I think is why it's worked so long so far. If I was doing it again I'd just buy a new lock mechanism.
