Bolero MDI kit installation

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I've bought a MDI kit model number 5N0 035 342E for my Bolero radio.

However, upon installing it it didn't work. I have a blue connector and some chopped wires (including two orange and a brown) and was wondering if it was this, if it those where do they need to go on the radio?

I've attached some pictures to show what I mean.

Thanks

Then yes, you still have some work to do :)

The cut wires should be for power, ground, CAN high and CAN low. You'll need to splice them into the existing wiring to your headunit to give the MDI unit power/communication.

If I remember correctly:

- MDI pin 1 is ground

- MDI pin 2 is CAN low

- MDI pin 7 is power

- MDI pin 8 is CAN high

You should double check those and it might be worth peeling some of the tape back as there appears to be five wires, that's one more than I'd expect.

Once that is done, you'll need to use VCDS or equivalent to code the car and headunit to expect the MDI interface.

Do you have an aux socket in the car already? That'll need extra wiring if you want it to continue working.

Okay. Thank you. There are two more wires in it as well, in addition to the orange and brown.

Where would those wires need splicing into? Which cables / connector?

Aux is already in the car but doing away with this if the MDI works.

Thanks.

The best plan is to find out how many wires you have and where each goes on the MDI connector.

From that, we can work out what each wire does and therefore where they need to go.

Can you make a list showing which of the 12 pins are connected on the MDI connector? Ideally including what colour (both wire and stripe) the wire is and where the other end is.

As ever Langers is correct. This description of the pins in the MDI connector confirms the 4 pins are 1, 2, 7 and 8 and which wires to splice these into on the head unit.

I suspect the fifth wire is a shield (if so it would be connected to pin 12 at the mdi and wouldn't actually connect to the head unit). This also shows how you can retain your aux (which if wired like this will work when nothing is connected to the mdi).

Hi, thanks for the replies.

The pins are:

1 = brown

2 = orange with brown stripe

3 = not used

4 = purple

5 = white

6 = purple

7 = red with white stripe

8 = orange with purple stripe

9 = white

10 & 11 = black

12 = not used

The wiring where it has been chopped are:

2 x orange 1 with purple stripe 1 with brown

2 x black

1 X white

1 X brown

1 X purple

Thanks

Just to point out, the two black wires on the cut end are probably mutli-core. If you strip back an inch of the insulation and shield, you might find both have three wires inside.

Firstly, to power the MDI interface and allow it to communicate with the car you'll need to wire up:

- MDI pin 1 is ground, brown wire, connect to the quadlock ground

- MDI pin 2 is CAN low, orange/brown, connect to quadlock CAN low

- MDI pin 7 is power, red/white, connect to quadlock power - you probably need to peel back some take to find this on the cut end of the wiring
- MDI pin 8 is CAN high, orange/purple, connect to quadlock CAN high

Secondly, to get audio from the MDI interface to the headunit you'll need to wire up:

- MDI pin 4 is audio out right, purple, connect to quadlock aux in right

- MDI pin 9 is audio out left, white, connect to quadlock aux in left

- MDI pin 10 is audio out ground, black, connect to quadlock aux in ground

These will probably be inside one of the thicker black cables, the shield of which should also be grounded.

I've attached a picture showing the quadlock pinout:

-highlighted red is power/ground/CAN

- highlighted green is aux in from the MDI unit

If there are already pins in the highlighted green section, those are from the aux in socket and need rerouting as follows

- MDI pin 5 is audio in left, white, connect to aux in port left

- MDI pin 6 is audio in right, purple, connect to aux in port left

- MDI pin 11 is audio in ground, black, connect to aux in port left

- MDI pin 12 is shield in ground, metal strands, connect to aux in shield

This will probably be the other thick black wire.
