Terraclean on a Fabia VRS -my thoughts

Featured Replies

Can the carb cleaner be used whilst the egr valve is still on the car?

Edited by GeneralDogsbody

Is there actually any proof or evidance that this terraclean does anything better than already tried and cheaper practises?

so for less than £15 you can purge your injecters -

for free you can remove manifold and clean/ burn it clean etc

for lets say £60 you can EGR delete and map out, and do elephant mod

What does Terraclean do better than the above?

The videos show it like that, but honestly, but honestly better to remove it so you don't end up with engine lock. A neighbour ended up doing it and is lucky he didn't wreck it.

I don't think it's smart to spray it into the intake whilst running and I found it was about 20 minutes to get off.

Used: ball end allen wrenches, ratchet for the turbo to EGR pipe (and some plusgas) and a new EGR gasket (optional).

I took the EGR off of my diesel octavia and even though it was fairly light, a cleanup gave me marginally better MPG. Left the intake manifold as it was a fairly light build up.

The EGR clean alone gave me increased mpg! only things you might need are ball ended allen wrenches, an EGR washer and your standard tool set I guess.

Not a big fan of "terra clean"

Dogsbody - try 2 tanks of shell vpower and tell me if it's still kicking out smoke?

I find that BP ultimate is more smokey than vpower.

Slightly off topic: I stick redex for diesel in my merc E220cdi every time i fill up ( to the top ) and i just cant make it smoke at all, even using kick down. Costs me £1.00 per tank, i buy the stuff when its half price in tesco & morrisons.

An update from the OP would be good a month on!

Well here it is then...

Car is still a lot smoother low down in the revs. Much happier driving round in the next gear up where before I would have dropped down a gear to keep it 'happy'

Smoke wise, still get smoke if I accelerate off boost (what diesel doesn't )but once on turbo it seems nice and clean still no signs of any black stuff

MPG, well thats another story. Its gone down slightly since I've done a few things to the car. I had issues with a binding brake after I had replaced discs and pads, which is now resolved.  Also I changed a the coolant temp sensor shortly after having the clean done, and I don't think the new sensor is functioning properly (won't get up to temperature on the dash fully unless you accelerate hard through to about 4k revs).

I've changed wheels to bigger ones also & they have cheap nasty tyres on them which are probably not very good for economy.

So to summarise, still really pleased with how much smoother car feels. In fact, the only gain Ive felt bigger than this performance-wise is when I had it remapped.

Will need to resolve my other issues first before being able to comment on MPG.

Edit: cooler weather may also be contributing to lower MPG at moment due to it taking soooo long to warm up

Swings and roundabouts then.

Now you can add something else to the equation, (computer modeling) cooler weather longer to warm up, cooler weather fresher air more oxygen.  Less grip on colder roads.

Winter Spec Diesel delivered to Filling Stations in Scotland and North of England and heading further south this month and next.

No idea but might be

How can I tell?

In theory you should be able to tell if it's not working correctly by feeling the temperature of the radiator bottom hose while the car is warming up. If it warms up gradually then the thermostat is not doing its job (not closing off fully when below threshold). If it stays cold and then abruptly starts to feel warm as the stat starts to open, it should be OK. In practice, depending on access, this may not be easy to determine.

I have considered using the little bottles, but find that 1. I worry about dangerous chemicals with the little one around 2. It's less hassle if i forget at fill up time.

I'll bear it in mind though.

Get someone with VCDS to log that for you and check it whilst you drive from cold.

With cold weather it can take a while for the TDI to warm up!

edit: oops, double post

I have VCDS lite if that would work,  what values should I be looking at?

Thanks for the update, C. Really interesting read. What do you mean about accelerating 'off boost' and how do you keep on boost to stop black smoke? On a side note, I've been running Shell V-Power fuel (as suggested) and the grey/black smoke had lessened. Switched onto Esso premium diesel today (as I was miles away from a Shell garage) and my car's chuffing away like a bloomin' chimney! If I gun it, I get grey and black smoke!

Off boost meaning before the turbo spools up. So below 1700 rpm ish in the pd130

as for your fuel issue, I’ve only ever used bp regular or Tesco or Sainsbury’s diesel and none seem worse than others for smoke or performance. I can’t see how premium fuel would give me any gains worth the extra cost so I’ve never bothered

I keep "top up bottles" and stuff like aerosol grease, WD40 in the car boot.

The thermostat controls engine temperature, not all the electronics. Change to a new thermostat. 95% certain that will solve the slow warm up/low running temperature.

Ok, but when I had my original coolant temp sensor fitted the gauge would go striaght to normal once it had warmed up. I only changed the sensor as it was recommended due to its age and tendency to drift out of calibration, and its been strange since.
