alternator change bkc 1.9tdi 2005

Featured Replies

Hello all

I did scout around for this on the forum - I can't beleieve that nobody has asked this previously...

How difficult is it to change the alternator on an Octavia estate 1.9 tdi (2005) BKC engine? Is it a DIY job or take it to my friendly mechanic...... After225,000 miles I think the alternator might not be working aswell as it should

Is the alternator providing enough charge? Should be running bout 14 volts when the engine is running.

thanks for reply etc............yes, the voltage is a bit low (only just, though) and drops without recovery on load (again, only just) butthe charge light hasn't switched on. I know for certain that the alternator is the original and at the mileage covered (225,000) it wouldn't hurt to change it.....

I am a pretty good diy mechanic but the reason I ask this question is that modern cars are so compactly built these days that most jobs I find can be awkward

I will watch out for your comments

can anyone advise on this job, please

Thanks

Tom

Just about to clock 225 in my 2005 BKC. Reading with interest. I have heard someone else say theirs went around this mileage on here.

I've got the bkd engine. It's the 2 litre diesel. On the clock it's 226738. Touch wood I haven't had to replace the alternator yet!

Lol....these 1.9tdi pd engines are just so reliable, I saw someone on ebay the other week selling one with........wait for it!! 427,000 and people were bidding to buy the car.... Unbelievable.

However, can someone advise on the difficulty of an alternator change,

Thx etc

Thanks so very much for posting the link.......I have now read it and the job doesn't seem too bad to me (Famous last words!!)

Thanks all

Tom

Looks very similar to my BXE. I've changed mine 3 times in 18 months, last one took less than half an hour. As it's original it'll probably need a bit of force to remove it once the bolts are out, mind your fingers! Once it gives out you'll have a nice cold piece of metal that it will hit and will hurt you. You may also find the undertray screws will be seized or you'll round off the heads as they'll definitely be heavily rusted!

Be careful of the wiring, since the last one went on I have a fault with the ASR and Cruise Control which I believe has something to do with a broken wire somewhere that's secured with the Alternator wiring. Very common on Fabias apparently!

And at 427k I'd imagine that was a well maintained taxi! It's far from the highest Mileage PD I've seen though!

I'd check the charging voltage with a new battery first before replacing the alternator unnecessarily.

If the battery is old/worn it will affect the readings and you could end up having to replace both.

A classic sign of a dying battery amongst poor cranking is headlights dimming during gear changes as the engine speed drops.

Also check the clutch pulley on the alternator, could be duff
