Scout 4x4

Featured Replies

If got a 2010 scout 4x4 how do i k ow of or when the 4x4 system is working is there a way to tell apart from when I'm stuck in mud

I ask is only getting 35mpg been carefully

I took it on a dirt track earlier and tried to spin the wheels but ovs didn't just all 4 had a grip straight away no spin what so ever and just pulled away up the hill tried it again and again no spin

Is there any tips to se of it is maybe permantly in 4x4 or not thanks

No expert but in 'normal' conditions most power is to front  with very little to rear. If fronts start to loose traction power is shifted to rear wheels. If it's not working chances are you would get front wheels spinning (as has been reported here previously).

It doesn't spin at all is what I mean even when I try to spin it it won't so I was woundering could it be in permant 4 wheel drive

It's not supposed to spin.

In the facelift scouts from 2010 onwards they have the mk4 haldex which uses readings from around the car such as how aggressively you are accelerating to anticipate spinning and counteract it before it happens.

Even my 2008 scout with mk2 haldex only gives the tiniest amount of spin before the haldex works it's magic and moves power around to the wheels with the most grip.

The only time I have been able to tell what is happening is on a steep hill in thick snow with well worn summer tyres, then you can feel the power moving between front and back as it tries to get some grip.

I used to look at the fuel consumption figures posted by other Octy Scout owners with a mixture of alarm and jealousy. Most seemed to be quoting 50-55mpg and even higher, whilst I was mid 40's*.

When first bought,  my daily commute was 50 miles each way, of which 90% was motorway and I was getting 47/48mpg, with a best  of 51.7mpg.

Now my commute is 3 miles each way evenly split between 30/40mph zones and I'm averaging 40-42mpg, with a low of 34mpg.

I looked at the brochure fuel consumption figures and it would appear I'm  near enough bang on with them.

*all my fuel figures are via Fuelly rather than from the trip computer which I've found to be wildly optimistic.

Good you get brochure figures because they are for comparison purposes only and did not involve a vehicle even being driven outside of a temperature controlled building on an actual road.

Well not before the introduction of the new real world tests required from this September, and they are only for a driver in a vehicle and no passengers, or luggage being carried.

Thanks I understand more now as I was woundering if maybe it was in constant 4 wheel drive due to poor fuel consumption
