Dreaded flashing glow plug light - Fabia 1.6 tdi

Featured Replies

Hi All

This has been turning into a bit of a saga so thought I would reach out for advice.

A couple of times in the past, (both times on a Sunday) my car refused to turn over with the glow plug light flashing and the engine management light flashing, later in the day or the next morning the car was fine, consulting the forums i found people reporting similar issues of unknown origin happening once then never again.

Two weeks ago this finally happened on a Saturday, the car was still dead come Monday morning so on my way to work I dropped the keys though my local mechanic's letterbox

He connected up to his diagnostic machine (snap-on) it showed an injector fault, as is didn't specify which injector he  decided to disconnect each in turn and on disconnecting injector 1 the fault went away and the car started, reconnecting the injector did not cause the fault to reoccur and I got the car back whereby it ran fine until the following Saturday.  I called the garage and he came up with the diagnostics box, tired the same as the week before with no luck, after a few attempts the car started. he left and 20 minutes later the car was dead again.

When on Monday morning it was still dead i dropped off the keys once again. As the garage was busy they didn't get to it until Thursday I'm told the mechanic came up to collect the car, tried to get it started, failed, went back to get his van to tow it in and then it decided to start, drove round to the garage , turned it off and it then refused to start again.

On a hunch he put a jump battery on the car and it started fine. putting a new battery on the car after which it started fine every time and no sign of the injector fault returning on the diagnostics, surmising that there want enough current in the nearly 6 year old battery to run both the starter and the fuel injection system.

I got the car back last night & again this afternoon it has died. I disconnected the injector, the flashing glow plug light went away I reconnected it and the car refused to start whether it was connected or not.  I have checked the battery with a multi-meter & it currently shows 12.3v

My dads telling me to just call Skoda & get them to bring the car in and they will know how to sort it, although since the car is showing an injector fault I suspect they would charge me more than my local guy has charged me for the hours hes put in just for towing the car in & then tell me it needs a set of injectors, also dont really want to throw the emissions software update into the mix if the car continues to act up

Any help & guidance hugely appreciated

Grant

Ok so after poking around somewhat aimlessly in the engine bay this morning I removed the injector connectors again, straightened out the wires and put them back,

Car started. and has started with no problem ever since.

Assuming its not another red herring, looks like it is a dodgy wire in the injector loom.
