knocking/clunking when pulling away

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My 2004 MkII is getting on a bit now, and I've noticed that in 3rd gear (and possibly 4th) I am getting a light knocking/clunking when I'm accelerating/pulling.  The engine sounds pretty sweet still, so I wondered if it's something to do with the gearbox?  When idle, the gearbox sounds a little rattly/less rhythmical than the engine.  This stops when I depress the clutch.  Car has done 110,000 miles.

Thanks,

Jim

sounds like the start of dmf failure if noisy on idle and goes on a depressed clutch.

difficult to say what the noise is if only appearing in 3rd/4th

Thanks for your reply.  Does the DMF need replacing if it's on the way out, or can i be repaired?

Replace and you would do clutch as well. It's not cheap. Does sound like it may well be dmf  especially with noise at idle that goes with clutch pedal depressed.

Check driveshafts and engine mounts first or get them checked and find a mechanic to agree with diagnosis before embarking.
