DRL Kept on with Side lights

Featured Replies

Hi I've just Bought a Mkii Fabia and was wanting the driving lights to stay on when you switch on the side lights,

Is this possible.

Welcome.

?

Which Fabia?

Anything is possible, but if you are in the UK the DRL's will have to become less bright as they are when Daylight / Daytime Running Lights when the Sidelights / Headlights are on for Lighting up time.

(Well anything is usually possible, but not with a vRS seeing as the DRL unit is the Sidelight unit, so stops functioning as the DRL when sidelights are on.)

My fabia's DRL stay on when sidelights are on. I believe thats due to me fitting a Chinese auto headlight kit

You need autolights for them to stay on

The EU directive only states that they must dim/go out when the Dipped Beam is switched on - sidelights are fine.

True, it does say 'When HEADLIGHTS are turned on'.    Some like AA or RAC Quote 'MAIN HEADLIGHTS SWITCHED ON',

Does it say Dipped Beam somewhere?

But then the UK Highway Code and Traffic Law allows for driving with sidelights in areas with Street Traffic Lights during lighting up time where there are reduced speed limits.

So then DRL's would be illegal when it is Lighting up time if not dimmed with the sidelights.

Maybe clarification is required as to Sidelights switched on is the same as Head Lights switched on.

But then that being allowed to drive with Sidelights in 20,30 or 40 MPH street lit areas is so out of date that needs changing,

But then Cornering Fog lights functioning in towns or when reverse is selected in EU Construction and use stupidity.

If you had to use Sidelights (2 sides) instead of just a Parking Light (1 side) then DRL's at full intensity are not appropriate on with the sidelights.

(Not in the UK anyway.)

Here is the misunderstanding,  If you look at a UK Gov site, but they are as bad as Lost in Translation from German, Czech, Spanish, American.

Seems to be where DRL / Sidelight units have dual function got the wording as it is.

Then that has how the UK Highway Code and Traffic Laws are different from other European Countries.

Here is says they must revert to 'Position Lamps',  that is 'Sidelights' as was, and still are in English English, not EU / USA English.

I managed to do this, opposite to what you want to do, but the effect is the same.

I used VCDS.

There was an option in there, that went along the lines of sidelights on with ignition.

I enabled [ticked] said option, saved and exited from VCDS.

Now I can drive with sidelights + rear lights + number plate light and DRL; a–la Volvo/SAAB cars of the 1980s; in my opinion 'proper' DRLs.
