Petrol 1.4 TSI or 2.0 TSI DSG? and 4x4 or not 4x4?

Featured Replies

I've pretty much decided on ordering a new 1.4 TSI DSG Edition (exactly like pictured below), but a family member is urging for me to go for 2.0 TSI DSG - having had experience of the engine in other vehicles.

I only do about 6,000 miles per year and had problems with my DPF on my car. So not convinced on going diesel again this time.

Anyone test driven the 2 petrols? is it really worth paying the additional premium for even with the mpg penalty? Also 4WD - i'm not 100% convinced i need it. But is it worth paying extra for? Does it improve the ride or handling over the FWD version?

Finally, I really want anthracite wheels - will my local Skoda dealer help? or do i REALLY have to spend €1200 euros on new one's? https://eshop.skoda-auto.sk/eshop/en/b2c/rims/trinity-alloy-wheel-565071499b-fl8x/0/1/24/43/1001

Personally, I found the 1.4 to be more than adequate. It is peppy enough to overtake easily, even with fully loaded with 5 adults and 5 cricket kits in the boot. It's a turbo engine, so equivalent to a naturally aspirated 2.0 litre engine.

Most of my driving will be urban and motorways. I'll never go off road. So I didn't feel the need for 4WD. It's an additional 85kg weight.

You can get Triglav wheels and get it painted to your liking from a local wheel shop. Will cost around £75 to £100 per wheel.

The consumption of my diesel bear (140kw + 4x4) is better than of my former cars.

Video of my Kodiaq 2.0 TDI 140kW 4x4 DSG consumption while driving to work in the morning:

But for 6000 miles, Diesel makes no sense whatsoever. I did some calculations; for 10000 miles per year, it would take me 6 years to recoup the cost difference of Diesel model (£1800 more expensive than Petrol) taking real mpgs into account.

A 1.4 may be adequate for some folk, but no one ever complained about having too much power.

If you’re a low mileage driver then go for the 2.0 litre and enjoy the poke.

Again, if you can afford it, just splash out on the 4x4 and see how it works for you.

I did exactly that - but with the 190 diesel and I’m enjoying every minute.

Oh - and DSG is a no brainer!

Making me think the 1.4 TSI DSG is as quick accelerating as the 2.0 TDI 150 DSG.. very impressive...

If I went for the 2.0 TSI I would be getting more performance. But drinking more fuel. It's not that I can't afford to go for the higher performing petrols or diesels. It's a balance of enjoying more poke Vs more cash in more wallet!

When posted back early in this section had some thinking ' Media / Press cars are not always running standard engine management or 95 ron unleaded'.

Journalists / Motoring Journalists should know that and after the vehicles are on sale to the public they should go hire or borrow another vehicle and compare using the timing equipment.

(Not a borrowed from the VW Group vehicle.)

Actually Motoring or other journalists should maybe check via the OBDII Port many vehicles they Road Test / Review, check tyre pressures as well.

Put on a Weigh Bridge and compare all with the 'Media Press Pack' then ask the Launch Team about any irregularities / implausible results.
