1.4 tsi, hard to engage 1st

Featured Replies

Has anyone else got problems engaging 1 st gear on their 1.4 , mine will go if selected a few times, all other gears work fine, its just hard to select most of the time, and would there be a remedy, there car is still under warranty and only done 20k, can the selector be adjusted

I'm presuming yours is a manual :)

I've never had a problem engaging first gear although the first to second selection is not the best I have experienced when trying to do it fast (just a bit too notchy).

There is a fairly simple (under the bonnet) procedure to reset the gear selector mechanism that has been referenced in previous similar threads some years back, but I have not needed to use it myself.

I'll see if I can find the YouTube video.

If your car is under warranty so you would be far better off getting them to do it, and it registers a potential problem if the reset fails to improve the situation.

It has indeed been covered a while back, many users found it notchy especially when cold. I've recently had my car serviced and asked the mechanic about this (given that my previous mk 2 had an absolutely lovely, smooth gearbox). His reply was that in order to better protect the gearbox from wear they have used not one but two synchros for first and second gear (that are bound to suffer in slow traffic). He claimed that this makes the gearbox better stand the test of time but he did acknowledge it makes all of them notchy. You do get used to it after a while but then, if like me, you go back once in a while to driving a mk 2 you realise how much nicer things could be.

Have to say mine is notchy at time as well. The explanation makes sense!

Yes went from a Octavia 2 1.9 PD Manual to Octavia 3 1.4 TSI  Manual - notchy to say the least.

Skoda dealer says it's fine - of course.

I will have to investigate what this reset is all about.
