Hello! Considering buying a vRS, need advice!

Featured Replies

Hello, I have been wanting a vRS for years, finally thinking about going for one!

I was wondering if anyone tell me anything I should watch out for (what common issues they have etc)? I'd probably go for a mk 2.

I don't really drive much, barely a few k miles a year - which one is right for me?

Thanks :)

Welcome along!  With such low mileage I think you're definitely  looking at a petrol vRS

Yes! I think I am!

Is there any warning signs I should look out for?

What kind of mileage would you be a little put off by on a petrol vRS? (what mileage does it start going down hill)

Hello MrG welcome along to the Skoda forum full service history and what Superb170 wrote go for the petrol.:)

Signs of excessive oil consumption or excessive smoke from the TSI I should think. You’ll be looking at what, a 5-ish year old car?  Have a look at Cars for sale classifieds on Briskoda or Pistonheads classifieds.

Seems a slightly odd choice for a car if you only do a few Km a year - you’ll be paying a fair premium for insuring something that just sits in the garage.

Thanks for the reply Pilot.

How would I identify excessive oil consumption?

I've been looking for a good few years, just thinking its time to get one.

To me it seems like a sensible choice of car to me, as I've wanted one for years.  Cost isn't really an issue in terms of upkeep. I pay similar prices for tax so on for the car I currently have, although a vRS Octavia will knock my insurance up around 400 more pounds.

Thanks again for the reply! :)

You should check the history carefully, ask to see receipts if purchasing privately and service record if buying from a dealer.

It's not comfortable reading and I'm sure the majority of 1.8 & 2.0 TSI engines go on and on but take a look here Octavia 2

Thanks again Pilot, i'll give that thread a quick read :)

It makes for some very worrying reading.

It seems like a lot of issues with the tensioner, if I was to buy one with around 80k miles on the clock - a petrol Octavia, you'd think the tensioner had been replaced on it? Or it was just waiting to break?

Upsetting reading.

I don't think you can assume anything, find yourself a car that the vendor can prove to you has had a preventative fix carried out and you should be good to go.

There are probably none of these cars left in the dealer network now, so I'd probably look for a well-recommended specialist to buy from and ask about the issues discussed in that thread.

I assume the service history will highlight if these have been fixed?

Sorry for all the questions, this is my second car, after a cheap run around I don't care about! I want a good one :)

Best to do some car-hunting on Autotrader, Pistonheads etc and see what answers you get.
