using acetone in diesel...

Featured Replies

hmmm. I would be very interested if anyone else had any opinions about this as I work in a lab full of acetone! ;) (goes off to dig out his old text books)

VAG have a firm view on fuel additives in diesel. You will find it printed in bold in the Owner's Manual.

You would need to know the composition of all the materials used in the fuel supply lines, to ensure the acetone didn't dissolve any seals or pipes etc.

As DGW says though - something along the lines of 'do not add anything' is in the manual (for diesels at any rate).

My angle on it is that with a TDI it may be ok, but PD uses more extreme pressure and that in itself could cause different behaviours etc. Wouldnt bother myself :)

IMHO it would seriously Ken Acker up the injector pump on the TDI which relies on the lubricating effect of diesel to protect itself. You would also be chancing your arm with any rubber seals, hoses gaskets in the system (some rubbers will be destroyed in an amazingly short space of time by acetone.) some plastics will also not be too happy about being exposed to acetone.

Personnally I wouldn't go near it's cheaper to get a re-map than replace the injector pump !!

anybody out there heard of using acetone in their fuel to improve mpg and power' date=' found this link and wondered if its common knowledge/

Goodbye warranty. Goodbye insurance cover. Goodbye paint work if you spill it!

Sorry mate but this is rediculous!! IMO of course!!:D

True , and I wouldn't do it myself but don't forget Skoda also have fairly firm views on remaps and non standard parts ;)

Ive always used fuel additives. It certainly helped on my old petrol car keeping it running ok. And you would think on a diesel with the amount of soot out the back that it might need a bit of cleaning on the inside of the engine!

On additives, I used to use millars diesel clean and that was great.

On Acetone, don't forget to pay the duty on it.

Also acetone is particularly nasty stuff on most plastics and rubbers, not to mention that I wouldn't think it is easy to get hold of the stuff these days since july.

What a bunch of doubters you are. I have been adding acetone to diesel in my Toyota Yaris Diesel for over 2 years. Adding 1.3 ml per litre of diesel ( approx 770 to 1 ratio ). I promise you the difference is noticable instantly, big increase in torque (5th gear up hills) quieter, smoother and a bit more economical (5 - 10%). Back to doubting, what do you think is the main constituent of injector cleaner... marmite ? Still doubting ? Wait until you've only got 10 litres left and add 13 ml and enjoy. Maybe your hand me down engines can't handle the extra torque !:rotz:

Well 3 years since the OP we have moved on, but thank you for sharing your expert opinion, if 3 years too late.

As for hand me down engines, just who the **** do you think you are on one post, and coming up with lines like that. Please go back to a Toyota forum were you belong. :finger::finger:

Ahhhhh yes because Toyota diesel engines are sooooo good. and extra 5-10 economy would bring it almost in line with a PD on a bad day. Bet that Yaris has bags of torque too....

Injector cleaners (Current products) dont contain Acetone, they generally contain Phenol and Naphtha (Around 1% each) with the other 98% being Kerosene. You need to do your homework (Or have worked in an oil filter lab) before you post like that here...

Where is my Troll spray?

Here it is!

I have added all sorts of things to my tanks over the years. However raw acetone is one thing I will not be sticking in there.

Oh Oh looks like I got you right, but thank you and good luck with your PD?
