Advice! - Dealer/Servicing problem

Featured Replies

Hi gents,

I'm after a bit of general advice/conversation about the following as I can't get my head around it and quite frankly it's P***ing me off something chronic!

Firstly, sorry for the length of this post and I'd like to say I get on really well with the two service guys at my dealer and although we don't see each other often, they know me by name and they are always helpful.

Small back story with relevance to the below...

A month or so back the battery died on the superb (was my fault). Once I got the car started I obviously had to reset the clock. I didn't realise you could reset the service indicator in the car manually, and accidentally reset that by pressing both of the buttons on either side of the mph/rev clocks....

So...

My (14 reg) Superb CR170 went in for its service today, the service light was not indicating on my dash for the above reason but it was due because of the mileage.

Just so you're all aware, I have previously declined the update and today I'd done the same thing.

I went to collect the car and the car had its thorough yearly check with a video supplied to show 3 tyre defects. I was aware of the two front tyres (near limit and on order) but was not aware of a nail in the rear tyre, so many thanks to the thorough check (I'll sort that tomorrow)

Money exchanged and we went out to find the car...

I saw my car and quickly noticed that when the "Guy" (I won't mention names) unlocked the car, my fogs were not coming on.

I've had a few options on VCDS/VagCom turned on/off

1. "fogs on when locking/unlocking" turned on

2. "Xenon on when locking/unlocking" turned off

I'd had these options turned on/off as I've heard that the xenon's have a shorter lifespan when they are turned on and off all the time. Whether this is true or not, I don't care..

Anyway, I said straight away that the car has been 'played' with today and that I was not happy about it. I started the car up (I was stood up chatting to the "guy") then turned it back off, it still didn't work on lock and unlock.

So he said "well, I can only assume that it was from when he reset the service indicator, but I'll have to find out in the morning as the technicians have all gone home now"

I agreed and said that I wasn't happy as in the back of my mind I had a niggling feeling the car was going to get its 'software update' regardless of me declining it 3 times but I'd like to hope that wasn't the case.

So I jumped in the car after brief discussion and turned the car on - **BEEP** SERVICE NOW.

couldn't help but think to myself HOW ON EARTH IS THAT ON!!

  • it wasn't on this morning!
  • It's clearly not been reset!
  • If it has been plugged in and reset why is it on now?.

So went back in, and mentioned that the service light was not reset and that I'd had no idea how it was on anyway!

Again I mentioned that I was rather annoyed at this situation because as much as it was only a setting that has been turned off, and a service light that's not been reset. What else has or has not been done today???

So... again I leave...

turn the car on...

***searching for phone***

***unable to find phone***

I tried it manually. Nothing

I tried deleting it... won't delete as it's in use...

I tried turning the car off, key out back in, waited for initialising to cease then tried again manually. NOTHING!

All of the diagnoses methods I'd used before to sync my phone or media did not work.

So.... I'd like answers... but the answers that I currently have (my own) just don't seem to add up!

In my opinion.. it's been plugged in today and whilst it may not have had a "factory reset" something has been done... but what?..

Why would someone go into VCDS and just turn off some features?

Your thoughts?

Also... when in neutral the car revs COMPLETELY differently now... this may come across as me being paranoid but it's a habit I have and I am 100% certain it's revving differently now!

COINCIDENCE........Yes, Probably....

Sorted the text size

Contact the Dealer Principal in person & also have it in writing and be sure to put it on big print.

This crowd will be not interested.

:D big print.. sorry I'd copied it from my notes in my phone and it came out like this.

It seems strange as they tend to the bare minimum so switching off settings in VCDS is unlikely. More likely that they’ve done the emissions fix despite your objections especially as you’ve now noted that it is revving different most likely feeling a bit lack lustre at lower revs and needing more pedal input to get the same performance.

If this is the case then I feel sorry for you as I expect lots of stress and no progress to getting it resolved.

Its exactly this! Through the lower revs it sounds a lot more tractor like and is no where near as smooth as it use to be.

When you 'blip' (for want of better words) the throttle, it doesn't have the same response and lack lustre is a great description.

I tried... but I select all of the text, hit the 'Size' button and the selected text is no longer selected :speechless:

?

Did you receive your various invitations to allow the VW Group to play the lottery with your cars running and economy and did you reply and decline?

What about this latest offer they have been sending out.

&

did the dealership service desk employee give you the document to sign declining 'The Fix'?

I recieved this booklet this week. Not sent it back as it was going in this week also.

I have signed to DECLINE 'The Fix' 3 times now and on the cars previous service I signed the paperwork but "the fix" wasn't released by then anyway.

Today... it's a different story... I feel that something HAS been done.

Did they give you a copy of the waiver you signed when you left it in?

If there's a sticker on the build label in the boot showing '23R6' this means the update has been applied. Alternatively, depending on how quick the info is sent back to Skoda, the VIN check on the Skoda UK website may tell you if the update has been applied.

If they have done the update without your permission, you need to go straight to the dealer principal and have a chat with him. Regardless of your opinion of the update, if they have carried out work you asked them not to do that's a major breach of your trust on their part. They will need to make good here.

Have you been able to resolve the phone/lighting issues since? In other words, was this just an inconvenience or have they caused damage?

No, I've not got a copy of the waiver... just my job sheet that says *** NOX UPDATE DECLINED BY CUSTOMER***

I'll get a call from them in the morning to discuss the lighting issue... but this has me thinking... would it be possible that the lights have been moved from 'Auto' to another setting and this then turns the lights off on lock/unlock??? Or would this feature still work?

the branch was closed when I got home to discuss the Bluetooth as I tried to sort it several times on my way home, I got out several times and tried different methods etc just to make sure it wasn't me having a funny five minutes!

As for the sticker in the boot I will check this now!

At least you have something in writing that says you didn't want it done, which is the main thing.

I'm not sure about the lighting issue - have you checked the menus on the MFD to see if you can reconfigure any of it?

Well... just went out to the car... thought I'd give it one last try whilst checking the emissions sticker...

so, I unlocked the car... no fogs..

get in, phone in pocket ***initialising***

bam... CONNECTED TO *Skoda Superb DSG* (I've named my phone Skoda Superb DSG A. It looks good on Maxidot & B. I don't want customers knowing my name :D )

so I re-parked the car in a better location closer to the house as I've got a lot to put in the car in the morning. Whilst I was there I was going through all the menus and nothing stood out.. nothing looks changed.

So so I now have Bluetooth back... how has this suddenly reappeared though! What the hell!

Checked the boot too... no sign of a new sticker as far as I can see

As as for the lights... I think I'll try the lights settings in the morning as I've got a funny feeling that they may be on 'main beam' setting as I remember putting it back to 'Auto' the last time they had it for servicing...

im hoping that his is going to solve it... if not I'll have to get it reprogrammed.

then it'll be down to the service indicator and that definite difference in the revs

It might have been your phone tbh. Sometimes they can cause the problem. i.e. My car will integrate with Amazon Music but every so often (maybe 1 in 5 times) it just doesn't work. If I kill the app properly or (more rarely) restart the phone it all works again.

I agree with others in that the grease monkeys are unlikely to have 'played' with the settings on your car. Any changes are likely the result of a single larger change such as a software update which may or may not have been part of the emissions 'fix' that they may or may not have carried out without permission.

I'm not sure where you would stand with someone carrying out work without charge but without permission especially when on paper/technically/legally it's an improvement.

If they do work without permission and charge that's potentially fraud but that wouldn't apply here.
