If the turbo has disintegrated they need more time to clean all the swarf out of the intercooler and pipework, even so I cannot understand how it's a grand, a standard recon turbo and five hours labour is about half that.

@£50 an hour maybe. @£75 or £100 and they cost out gaskets and oil pipes etc, it's got to be closer to £1000, especially if they go the new turbo route.

Quote from the garage is £550 labour incl VAT!  Plus a reconditioned turbo £600.  £1150, no chance!  Even if I put on the 2nd hand turbo offered on here, it's still going to be £650.  So, my dilemma is;

1) Do I shell out that in the hope of clearing a grand to make it worthwhile?  I think that's realistic as there's not many around looking on Autotrader and the Whatcar/Confused valuation services are averaging (using bottom values) £1234 as a private sale as a runner.

2) Sell as is for £600 as is (minus a working turbo but still a runner)?

Opinions from the floor please...:sweat:

£550 labour is daylight robbery, for such a simple and quick job, get another couple of quotes, it's so easy that a mobile mechanic could do it on your drive in a few hours.

May I suggest you ask an independant VW specialist to quote for fitting an exchange reconditioned turbo rather than a brand new one, just about every PD130 on the planet has had one done by now, they're not rare.

I've put a couple of calls in to a couple of VAG independents. They'll get back to me tomorrow now. However, one did say between £400-£500 is probably about right... I must live in expensive turbo county!!:sadsmile:

You asked for opinions. I would say sell it as it is but i dont know all the facts.

Have you bought a new car yet, how would you get it to a garage to be repaired, would you still be insured on it when it was repaired or would your insurance have moved over on your new car.

I've just listed it here:

 All your points are pretty much covered.  I'll keep it insured under my multi car policy can't for long.  If you know anyone who'd want to take it off my hands, please direct them to me.

Cheers.

£5-600 is a realistic value as stands imo.

If if it were me I would get it fixed me keep it, just not from that garage as it seems a tad expensive.

Also symptoms does the car have to suspect a blown turbo, personally I'd take it to another garage and get a second opinion.
