Hello can any one on here help me with a problem I’m having I’m struggling to find any sort of procedure on actually changing the timing chain on my 1.4tsi engine the Code is a C A V E also I know there’s a special tool required the hold the cam shafts in place managed to find a part number for such a tool (T10171A) only to read this tool is for a C A V D engine variant can any one tell me it will also work on my engine or what the part number is for the specific tool i need for my engine ????

Hello,

Others will be along shortly with better answer but out of interest why do you need to change it? The 'chain' is supposed to be there for life.

Has chain slipped or problem with tensioner? what is your actual issue, do you have error codes / engine noise?

Its one of those jobs best left to a Skoda / VW technician equivalent, in some instance's covered by warranty depending on agreement

Im 2010 CAVE so would probably get nothing towards a problem and i dont have a warranty agreement

My car is also 2010 (60reg) an It’s seems As though my engine has got tappy if not for a better word I check my oil regularly but after seeing so many problems with the timing chains on 1.4tsi engines or the tensioner problems should I say I am thinking of getting mine changed more for piece of mind than anything else I will post a video of my engine on start up tick over a under revs to see what other people think

Do you have in 5w 40 FS (VW 502 00) and use Super Unleaded.  & Good sparkplugs at the correct gap?

5W 30 FS LL is spawn of the devil in twinchargers IMO.

Never heard of many Timing Chain Problems with CAVE engines in the vRS 2010-2012.

Plenty on the CTHE now though.

Hi yes my engine is running Castrol edge 5w-30 fs oil and I use Tesco unlimited 99ron fuel also had all coils and spark plugs changed around 6 months ago as one coil was faulty cause my eml light to flash on under any more then gental acceleration I have also noticed my car has recently been ticking over a little higher more on the 1,000rpm then under it my car engine will soon hit 92500mile and I don’t want to become victim of major engine failure due to timing chain or tensioner failure would a Skoda dealer or specialist skoda garage be able to inspect my chain with out having to strip away half my engine ? Any help much appreciated thanks in advance

Good miles.

Doubt the chain will fail, the tensioner might.

Do not drain long the oil when doing an oil change.

See 'the pinned thread' Lucifers Ultimate Guide linked, top of page.

Best go to 5W 40 FS oil, really.

?

Are you still on the original water pump and belts?

Tick over is usually 1,100 rpm on start up and drops to 800 or so in under 40 seconds.

What is you Air Filter like, clean, standard?

They should be able to measure how stretched the chain is by unscrewing the hydraulic chain tensioner and measuring how far its extended.

Note tsi engines are tappy at idle often from the high pressure fuel pump which is mechanically driven off a cam on the camshaft.

As we know, the chains do not stretch they elongate with wear.  So lets just say some chains stretch.

not that CAVE engine has that a common issue even at over 100,000 miles,

as chain failure is not common.

Dealers have been measuring Chain Stretch with the newer engines late 2012 on.

No problem paying them the £85 plus VAT an hour to have them check.
