Front wheels pointing in different directions!

Featured Replies

I have noticed the odd clunk when giving a good few turns on the steering. I'm guessing a ball joint or something about to go. Well I think I must have had a wheel against the curb and I've turned out of the curb and have obviously done a proper job of breaking something as the front wheels are now both pointing out. Any ideas what has gone?

Is this an easy fix for a mildly competent DIYer. I can get it high enough I think and have a multidue of axel stands etc.

Any ideas where best to purchae a new one and I guess, I should replace both sides and get the tracking done by a pro after.

Get them from Euro  and you will need a tool to remove tie rod like this

That would of had to had some thump to bend that:wondering:

Thanks Del8oy.

I'd have thought it would need a fairly big thump too. The bent side was exposed to road with the tire pointing out slightly, not the curb so I can only assume that something hit the tire and pushed it round on an already weak tie rod against the other wheel which was mm from the curb? The tire on the side does now look like it has a slow puncture. In all the hours of video I have some fireworks as the noise/sound wave no doubt set the camera off but nothing to sugest any one hit me. It's a mystery, really it is...

As well as the track rod , there is a reasonable chance this has damaged the steering rack - that looks as though it has received a serious whack!

My tyre and a pot hole came together (not quite on the straight either) seriously enough to destroy both but the steering rack was fine.

The dirt that has come off the thread is I believe a result of the upward movement but what puzzles me is what appears to be the marks on the steering rack arm as if a set of still sons (not correct spelling I know) or similar have grip the arm. Maybe I am seeing too much.

In all honesty I agree but I cannot for the life of me recall how. It MUST have been a 3rd party and possibly by reversing into the tyre. I have not curbed it myself. I have hit a pothole with some considerable force but I've been driving the car for weeks after!

Hmmm. Which points to what further thoughts/theories..?

Slightly different view, both pics just pics, I've not been anywhere near them physically. I did drive the car a few yards though and had to 3 point turn to limp back so it's possible the track rod has come into contact with other parts on the suspension or ARB maybe...

A = crap dislodged due to the bending

B= contact with C or ARB after the arm was bent ? as it looks recent

D not sure, as it looks like it's been there some time due to surface rust ? but also shows signs of recent contact with some other part of the ARB/suspension ??

Seems sensible.

OK so this is now sorted, I got the parts (thanks Del8y) and had a go myself but failed as I don't have all the right tools/time/skill. So it got carted off down the road to my local garage this morning and £150 later, both sides are now replaced and it's booked in for geo on Friday. Garage suggested that the bent rod was caused by someone driving into/reversing into the tyre and not all that uncommon. Seems to make sense, our road is a bloody nightmare for idiot drivers and selfish inconsiderate parking by non residents; I have so many bumps and scrapes, it's real shame.
