Brake Pedal and Steering Wheel "Judder" at high speed

Featured Replies

Hi all, first time posting so be gentle.

I've had a problem recently with my mk.2 Octavia vRS estate where when I'm going at motorway speeds, some vibration can be felt from the steering wheel. When I brake from these speeds I can feel the brakes "strobing" if that makes sense, the pedal stays constant but the braking force doesn't. When I go faster (up to 90 mph), it gets much worse very quickly, the steering wheel vibrates a lot and the brake pedal will judder back and forth when braking.

I'm not sure what could be causing it so any advice would be appreciated. I had an accident with a kerb when a first bought the car that led to me replacing an alloy and repairing another, and I've recently had a seized caliper which has been replaced along with pads and disc because it was warped.

Thanks in advance!

Sounds most likely to be warped discs. The run out on the disc rotor causes the braking force to vary.  Mine was like that when I bought it. I put new rotors and pads on all 4 corners.  You could take wheels off and measure run out. Or if they look like they've been in place for a fair while - replace them.  On the MOT  they measure braking force variance and it may get an advisory or fail if bad. Brakes are primary safety items - obviously.

Yeah, that was my first thought too but I wouldn't have thought I'd get steering vibration while not braking unless the pads were contacting the braking surface?

The steering vibration could be your wheels need balancing, if the brake brake discs are very badly warped (can still happen with new discs) then it can and does cause vibration through the steering system. Also worth noting that any damaged ball joints can also do this.

Any good tyre fittng place will balance wheels for small fee.

Yes. Could be more than one problem. But pulsating pedal, noticeable shudder when braking, worse at high speed sounds like brake discs could well be one of the problems..

I am swaying towards warped discs, At worked we have had a few "bad" discs, new in the box so been fitted only for the customer to return with same problem, done a run out test (using a dti gauge) and found the discs warped, fitted new but better brand discs under warranty; fault gone. And before people ask i always, always make sure the drive flange is clean of rust or corrosion before fitting new discs, as even the smallest bit of rust or corrosion can create the same vibration through the brake pedal as warped discs.

9 times out 10 customers want the cheapest option, and yes i know sometimes the more expensive options have faults as well, but thats the motor trade for you.

It's going to the garage tomorrow so if it's the rotor that got replaced hopefully they'll replace it with a non defective one free of charge. Bent hubs not a bit more suspect, especially given my wee moment?

Thanks for all the help so far!

Update: disc they fitted had massive toe out from factory, didn't bother to check so replaced under warranty. Other car that was in for a service came back with a misfire so think I'll be changing garages.

Thanks for all the help!
